2,500-mile charity motorcycle ride connects Key West’s Southernmost Point with Minnesota’s Northernmost Tip

Key West, Fla.  — Key West’s iconic Southernmost Point may be the end of the road for southbound travelers. But this weekend, it’s just the beginning of an epic charity motorcycle ride that will connect Key West with its northernmost counterpart in the contiguous U.S. — Angle Inlet, Minnesota.

The Buoy to Buoy Ride for Charity and its six participants will leave from the concrete buoy that marks Key West’s Southernmost Point before dawn on Saturday, July 19. They’re all master masons and members of the Florida-based nonprofit called Brothers of Tyre, which holds various events to raise money for veterans’ causes and children’s charities.

The Brothers of Tyre, based in Bradenton, Florida, hope to cover 2,500 miles in just three days, ending the trip at Angle Inlet, the northernmost point of the continental United States, which is marked with a “sister buoy” landmark similar to its Key West counterpart.

The group is raising money for Bert's Salute to America Foundation, which supports first responders and veterans. 

Key West Mayor Dee Dee Henriquez sent the riders off from the Southernmost Point with commemorative Key West challenge coins to exchange with coins from the mayor at Angle Inlet. 

In true Key West style, the Buoy to Buoy riders will also be traveling with mini bottles of rum, produced on the island at Key West’s First Legal Rum Distillery, “so they’ll be the southernmost — and northernmost — rumrunners,” said distillery owner Paul Menta. “It’s just a cool and worthwhile trip for charity and it’s great that these guys are keeping the connection alive between the two buoys at opposite ends of the country.”
