Against All Odds:  Internet Sensation "Molly the Sea Turtle” Returns Home 

KEY WEST, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2025) – She's racked up more than 100 million views across social media — all while fighting for her life in a Florida Keys hospital. Now, internet superstar "Molly the loggerhead sea turtle" is finally returning home.   

Hundreds of fans from across the country, packed a Key West beach on Wednesday to see something they waited more than three months to witness — a 170-pound sea turtle — who defied the odds and survived massive tumor – return to sea.  

Molly's story reminds all of us why we should never give up! After being rescued from a crab trap line, covered in barnacles...and suffering from a massive tumor, Molly was taken to the Turtle Hospital in the Florida Keys.  

The hospital wasted no time, jumping into action to perform a three-hour surgery to remove Molly's massive tumor. But even then, they weren't certain Molly would survive. After all, said hospital officials, no loggerhead had ever recovered from a tumor this large.  

"When Molly was admitted to the Turtle Hospital, her blood levels were critically low. That ginormous tumor was oozing blood. It was a very risky surgery...I'll say that!" said Bette Zirkelbach, manager of the Turtle Hospital. "The veterinary team was able to remove that tumor. Once it was removed, Molly started getting stronger every day. Her resilience was amazing."  

Molly's case represents a medical breakthrough in treating a condition called fibro-papil-loma-tosis. (PRONOUNCED: Fibro-Pap-Uh-Loma-Toe-Sis) a virus that causes debilitating tumors and affects more than half of green sea turtles in the Florida Keys. While common in green sea turtles, the disease is rare in loggerheads, making Molly's recovery particularly significant for veterinary research.  

As Molly slowly recovered, The Turtle Hospital documented her progress on social media. And it wasn't long before the rest of the world took notice. Videos of her swimming to soundtracks by Taylor Swift, and getting spa days post-surgery, went viral across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, accumulating more than 100 million views — including 82 million on Facebook alone and 25 million on TikTok.  

The response to Molly's will to live was unprecedented. Families traveled from across the country to visit the tenacious at the Marathon, Florida facility. The hospital also received a crush of cards, drawings and gifts from followers checking on Molly's daily milestones.  

Then, on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025, Molly's moment had finally arrived. She was carefully lifted from her tank at the Turtle Hospital and transported to the very place she was rescued, near a beach in Key West. But this time, she wasn't alone. Several hundred people gathered at Higgs Beach to witness Molly's return to the ocean. As hospital staff carried her to the water's edge, the crowd watched with anticipation. And when the moment came for Molly to enter the water and start swimming, the crowd erupted in cheers.  

"When I pulled up in the Turtle Hospital ambulance with Molly and saw literally a beach full of people, hundreds of people passionate about Molly, excited to see Molly, it gives me hope not just for sea turtles, but in us as humans that we do care," Zirkelbach said. "Don't listen to what people tell you. We do care. Compassion is contagious. And together we're going to change the world and save sea turtles." 

Just before her release, Turtle Hospital staff fitted Molly with a satellite tracking tag. The tag was affixed to her shell to provide researchers with valuable data on loggerhead sea turtle movements and behavior while allowing her millions of online followers to track her journey through Florida Keys waters and beyond.   

"Molly is such a special sea turtle. We felt it important to get a satellite transmitter tag on her that will not only help scientists learn about the migratory route of a female loggerhead sea turtle but will also help the general public follow Molly at sea," Zirkelbach said. "You're going to be able to click on a link and see her journey."  

The Turtle Hospital, in the heart of the Florida Keys, is the world's first state-certified veterinary hospital for sea turtles. Since opening in 1986, the facility has rehabilitated and released more than 3,000 sea turtles back into Florida Keys waters.
