Duty Above All: Key West TSA Officers Honored as Travel Heroes

KEY WEST, Fla. (July 17, 2026) — Even as missed paychecks created uncertainty at home, Transportation Security Administration officers at Key West International Airport never stopped showing up. Day after day, they reported for duty with the same professionalism, vigilance and commitment to public service that travelers depend on.

Those officers were recently recognized for that extraordinary dedication when Monroe County Mayor Michelle Lincoln presented them with a replica of the U.S. Travel Association's Travel Hero Award. The honor recognizes frontline aviation professionals who continued reporting for duty during the federal government shutdowns of 2025 and 2026, ensuring millions of Americans could travel safely despite the personal financial hardship they faced.

While the nation debated budgets and funding in Washington, TSA officers across the country remained focused on the people standing in front of them at airport security checkpoints. They continued screening passengers, protecting the traveling public and keeping the nation's aviation system operating...not because they were being paid, but because they believed in the responsibility entrusted to them.

"It is my privilege to present the U.S. Travel Association's Travel Hero Award to the TSA officers of Key West International Airport," Mayor Lincoln said during the presentation. "These men and women demonstrated remarkable dedication to public service by continuing to protect travelers and keep our airport operating during an incredibly challenging time. Their professionalism, resilience and selflessness deserve our gratitude and recognition."

The impact of that commitment was especially evident at Key West International Airport, where TSA officers continued protecting travelers and keeping flights moving throughout the 76-day shutdown. Airport leaders say their efforts were critical to maintaining the safe, reliable operation visitors and residents depend on.

"Over the course of the 76-day shutdown, our TSA officers were responsible for the screening and safety of more than 200,000 outgoing passengers and an untold number of commercial airline personnel," said Richard Strickland, Executive Director of Airports. "Their dedication is a major part of Key West International Airport's continued success, and this award is a token of our appreciation for all that they do."

For every visitor arriving in the Florida Keys, TSA officers are among the first faces they encounter. Their dedication not only keeps travelers safe, it helps create a welcoming first impression and supports the tourism industry that powers the Keys' economy.

Their dedication was especially meaningful in the Florida Keys, where tourism generates approximately $3.6 billion in annual visitor spending and supports more than 19,700 local jobs. At Key West International Airport, TSA officers helped keep one of the region's most important gateways operating during a period of record travel demand. From January through May 2026, EYW welcomed 777,943 passengers, a 6.9 percent increase over the same period the previous year. In March alone, the airport recorded its busiest month in history, serving 175,779 passengers.

The U.S. Travel Association first presented the national Travel Hero Award during Destination Capitol Hill, its annual legislative event in Washington, D.C., in April. The award honored TSA officers and air traffic controllers whose commitment ensured the nation's aviation system continued operating throughout the federal funding lapses.

The national TSA award was accepted by Ha Nguyen McNeill, Senior Official Performing the Duties of TSA Administrator. U.S. Travel subsequently invited destinations across the country to recognize their local TSA officers with replica awards as part of a nationwide tribute to these frontline public servants.

The July 8 ceremony marked Monroe County's participation in that nationwide recognition effort, honoring the local officers whose quiet acts of service kept the Florida Keys connected to the rest of the country during an extraordinarily challenging time. While travelers may never have known the personal sacrifices taking place behind the checkpoint, the dedication of these officers ensured that vacations could begin, loved ones could reunite and the traveling public could continue to move safely through Key West International Airport.
