Heavy Guns Crew Claims Top Spot at 11th Annual Ladies Dolphin Tournament in the Florida Keys

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys (June 23, 2025) — Ninety lady anglers aboard thirty boats hit the water on June 7 for the Florida Keys Elks Lodge’s 11th Annual Ladies Dolphin Tournament, presented by Townsend Plumbing, in pursuit of the heaviest combined weight of three dolphin fish. More than $8,000 in cash prizes and sponsor swag were awarded to the top ten teams, making for a spirited day of competition. 

When the scales closed at 5 p.m., Team Heavy Guns took the crown, or in this case, the tiaras, along with $3,000 in cash, first-place prizes, and sponsor-filled swag bags, all presented at a festive awards dinner honoring the “Queens of the Fishing World.”

Tournament Results:

• 1st Place: Team Heavy Guns - Leah Maurer (Key Largo, FL) Zyla Zinkand (Key Largo, FL), Samantha Ellis (Key Largo, FL), and Jenny Nopp (Islamorada, FL) with Captain TJ Zinkand - 30.1 lb Dolphin
• 2nd Place: Team Angler Eddy’s- Maegan Cabrera (Tavernier, FL), Jess Ball (Tavernier, FL), Pam Simon (Tavernier, FL), and Peyton Sujat (Tavernier, FL)  with Captain Eddy Cabrera & Mate Cole Tristram - 23.8 lb Dolphin  
• 3rd Place:  Team Time Out- Jenny Mason (Islamorada, FL), Morada Mason (Islamorada, FL), and Lauren Marciano (Sunrise, FL) with Captain. Mike Mason & Mate Jeremy Sizemore – 23.1 lb Dolphin
• Largest Dolphin: Jenny Nopp (Islamorada, FL) – 21.4 lb Dolphin
• Junior Angler Award: Morada Mason (Islamorada, FL) – 4.8 lb Dolphin

With an aggregate scoring format, the tournament emphasizes strategy, teamwork, and consistency in a supportive, high-energy setting. The target species’ speed, vibrant coloration, and schooling behavior add to the thrill. Found near weed lines and floating debris, they strike fast and often, creating nonstop action and a thrilling target for both seasoned anglers and enthusiastic newcomers.

Rooted in camaraderie, community purpose, and giving back, the tournament has raised approximately $200,000 over the last 11 years, said tournament director Dianne Harbaugh. 

“The Elks are proud to support local charities like our children’s therapy van and summer camp for Keys students,” she said. “This tournament brings people together, raises funds for great causes, and gives back to the community we love.”

The event also blends sportfishing with sustainability, encouraging anglers to release non-weighed fish and recycle used fishing line. Many choose to donate their catch, which is transformed into meals for lodge gatherings that raise additional funds.
