Holiday Season Kickoff to Feature Art, Crafts and Music in the Lower Keys

Santa might wear shorts in the subtropical Lower Florida Keys, and tiny indigenous Key deer might reign instead of the anticipated holiday reindeer. Even so, visitors can welcome the festive season and celebrate the creative arts at the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce’s annual Island Art Festival.

The event is to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, on the grounds of the chamber’s visitor center at mile marker 31 oceanside on Big Pine Key. A seasonal tradition in the region, it blends a heaping helping of holiday spirit with the Lower Keys’ balmy temperatures and breezes.

The family-friendly outdoor festival typically includes some 75 booths, featuring handcrafted holiday items and creations by artists and artisans from the Keys and other Florida locales.

The event gives attendees an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind gifts, artwork and crafts while enjoying the Lower Keys’ tranquil natural atmosphere. Specialty items designed for the season, a wide selection and a variety of price points add to the attractions for those seeking holiday treasures.

In addition, some artisans offer demonstrations of their creative techniques or share secrets behind their craftsmanship.

While exploring the wares for sale, visitors also can enjoy live music by favorite local entertainers, relax in the shaded picnic area on the grounds, and savor food and beverages offered by on-site vendors.

Admission and parking for the festival are free, but attendees are asked not to bring picnic baskets or coolers.
