Marine Conservation to Highlight Mote’s Ocean Fest in Key West April 20

Surrounded by the protected waters of a vast national marine sanctuary, the Florida Keys offer a wealth of aquatic activities and opportunities for visitors to responsibly enjoy the ocean environment. Enthusiasts can celebrate that environment and its protection Saturday, April 20, during Mote Marine Laboratory’s 2024 Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration.

Taking place just two days before the global observation of Earth Day, the family-friendly festival is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park at 35 E. Quay Road. Admission is free.

Ocean Fest attendees can enjoy diverse eco-themed activities while increasing their awareness of the Keys’ rich marine realm and the need to preserve it.

The festival is presented by  Mote Marine Laboratory, an independent nonprofit marine research institution based in Sarasota, Florida. Its Florida Keys facilities include the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration on Summerland Key, a permanent exhibit at Islamorada’s Florida Keys History & Discovery Center, and coral nurseries in Islamorada and Key Largo.

Scientists from Mote and other conservation and environmental organizations are to be at Ocean Fest to provide insights into their work and explain how individuals can help protect Keys marine resources.

Attractions also include exhibits from environmental groups, booths featuring the creations of local marine artists and craftspeople, participatory games, live music, food and local brews.

Young festivalgoers can experience age-appropriate activities in the Kids Zone, while a fishing clinic for youngsters also is planned.

Proceeds and donations from Ocean Fest benefit Mote’s ongoing coral reef research and restoration programs.

Festival attendees also are encouraged to visit the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center adjacent to Truman Waterfront Park. The visitor facility for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the center features intriguing interactive exhibits about regional ecosystems including Mote’s re-creation of an in-water coral nursery.
