Offbeat Florida Keys Bridge Hop Celebrates ‘Moo-ving’ Slowly
KEY WEST, Fla. — Easter Sunday. For most, it’s synonymous with a search for brightly colored eggs or indulging in a delicious brunch. But in Key West, it looks a little different. As in cow-print tutus and bunny ears, with an ‘udder’ rejection of athletic ambition.
That’s what happened when one of the shortest bridges in the Florida Keys hosted the Bovines & Bunnies Zero K. Known as the most unathletic event in the country.
Hundreds of participants dressed in cow onesies and Easter-inspired racing suits, had just one requirement: ‘moo-ve’ slowly, VERY slowly. The “race” if you can call it that, went across the Cow Key Channel, which spans approximately 300 feet between Key West and neighboring Stock Island. That’s why it promotes itself as a “Zero K” — a race so short, it barely qualifies as any movement at all.
This year’s event coincided with Easter Sunday, inspiring a wave of bovine-bunny hybrids and a hopping good time. Costumes ranged from bunnies to cows to a merging of the two, with entire families (and a few very patient pets) getting in on the action. The adult racers even carried their own coolers and ‘beverages’ as they sauntered, hopped, and strutted across this super short bridge.
The coveted last-place award went to the slowest across the bridge while maintaining forward motion. Other awards included the ‘pass the grass’ award for the winning relay team. And the ‘honey bunny’ award for the best costume in the pets and people category.
Proceeds from this wacky race benefited the Monroe County Sheriff’s Animal Farm and the Alex Vega Key West Firehouse Museum.
