Florida Keys Concert Association presents extraordinary performances in both Marathon and Islamorada through February. Audiences can enjoy the energy of the lively Trio Zimbalist Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 10-11; the artistic and technical prowess of rising stars Stella Chen on violin and George Li on piano Feb. 17-18; and the prize-winning Esme String Quartet Feb. 24-25. Monday concerts take place at the Marathon High School Performing Arts Center at 350 Sombrero Beach Road, while Tuesday concerts are at the Coral Shores High School Performing Arts Center at 89901 Old Highway. The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St., presents multiple opportunities to enjoy live music. Scheduled highlights include rooftop concerts by vocalist Libby York — “Full Moon Love Stories” set for Feb. 12 and “Spring Has Sprung” March 27; the musical “confessional masterpieces” and timeless vocals by husband-and-wife duo Over the Rhine (March 4-5); folk music’s “rustic renaissance man” John McCutcheon (April 15-16); and worldwide "bluegrass ambassadors" the Henhouse Prowlers (April 22-23). Impromptu Classical Concerts of Key West has brought a variety of stellar ensembles playing classical music in all styles to the southernmost island city for over 50 years. The acclaimed organization’s 2025 concerts continue that tradition Feb. 9 with the Dover Quartet, named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years; this season’s rising star, pianist Avery Gagliano, performing Feb. 23; the pioneering oboe, bassoon and piano ensemble Poulenc Trio on March 9; and Duo Beaux Arts, Catherine Lan and Tao Lin, March 23. Performances take place at 4 p.m. at the historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 401 Duval St.

Rams Head Presents Key West brings several big-name acts to two separate venues as part of the Key West Concert Series:

• The Key West Theater at 512 Eaton St. features a packed season of performances in an intimate setting. Upcoming performances include the “greatest front porch blues band in the world,” The Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band, playing Feb. 5; The Steel Wheels set for Feb. 13; Western swing virtuosos Asleep at the Wheel Feb. 28; Awaken: The Music of YES April 6; and Delta blues virtuoso Tab Benoit with Sierra Green and the Giants April 11.
• At the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, 21 E. Quay Road, music lovers can enjoy top names performing live in an open-air waterfront setting. Upcoming concerts include the legendary Gipsy Kings featuring Nicholas Reyes Feb. 8; The Beach Boys Feb. 28; multi-platinum-selling country star Brett Young March 8; and Nate Smith with Chase Matthews appearing May 1 as part of the annual Key West Songwriters Festival.

Also in Key West, the Tennessee Williams Theatre, located at 5901 College Road, presents a sparkling lineup of top musical talent including the star of TV’s “Will & Grace” in “Eric McCormick in Concert” Feb. 8; a celebration of the iconic music of Broadway with “The Four Phantoms” Feb. 12; “A String Quartet Plays” Feb. 21; Bobby Nesbit starring in “The Cabaret with Bobby in the Lobby” Feb. 23-24; Neil Berg’s ultimate rock concert and history lesson, “50 Years of Rock 'n’ Roll” Feb. 28; singer-songwriter Sam Carlos March 5; Spanish guitarist Martina Bevis March 7; “Joy in the Cabaret” starring Joy Hawkins March 12-13; “Free Fallin’ — the Tom Petty Experience” March 29; the “Buckets N Boards” comedy percussion show April 1; and a trip back in time to the hottest entertainment of Las Vegas with “The Rat Pack — One More Time” set for April 5.

Also at Tennessee William Theatre, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, launched 27 years ago in Key West under the direction of Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, presents dynamic performances for music enthusiasts in the island city. The orchestra’s Valentine’s Day concert Feb. 14 is to focus on compositions that celebrate love, headlined by the swashbuckling “Don Juan,” a musical tale of the fictional Spanish rogue by Richard Strauss. An homage to composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is scheduled March 15, as the symphony performs the hauntingly beautiful “Requiem” with vocal performances by four remarkable soloists and the South Florida Symphony Chorus.

For an outdoor concert experience, the Florida Keys Community Concert Band hosts the free “Pops in the Park” series. Upcoming performances, each on Saturday afternoons at 4 p.m., include “Kokomo Key” Feb. 22, showcasing Florida songs and tropical music with special guests Mangrove Swamp Band; “Twilight Tunes” March 29 featuring movie and show tunes with special guests Ukulele Joy; and “Conch Classics” April 19 presenting international music from throughout time. The February performance is to be held at Murray Nelson Government Center’s Peace Park, mile marker 102 bayside, with the remainder at Islamorada’s Founders Park amphitheater, mile marker 87 bayside.

Islamorada Community Entertainment brings quality entertainment and cultural events to the Upper Keys including performances in the Beats on the Bay music series at the amphitheater in Islamorada’s Founders Park, mile marker 87 bayside. Dark Side of the Sol recreates the sounds of Pink Floyd Feb. 14, and The Freebirds pay tribute to the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd March 7. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free but there is a $10 fee for parking. The Beats on the Bay series finale, Bay Jam, takes over the amphitheater from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 13. The annual art and music festival features a packed lineup of musicians along with art, craft and food vendors.

The annual Afro Roots Fest returns to the Keys Friday through Sunday, April 4-6, with a weekend of free musical entertainment highlighting Afro-Caribbean vibes in the beer garden at the Florida Keys Brewing Company, 81611 Old Highway in Islamorada. Performances are to feature Cortadito playing traditional Cuban folk music of the early 20th century, roots and reggae beats with Philip Montalban, Latin funk and fusion by Electric Piquete and more.

The Key West Songwriters Festival, set for April 30 through May 4, is to showcase America’s foremost performing songwriters on multiple stages and venues in the island city. The highly acclaimed event typically includes more than 50 shows and over 200 country and pop music hitmakers. Now in its 29th year, the festival has become a tradition for top writers and musicians, while offering an unparalleled experience for music fans.

Since 1978, The Key Players group has brought live community theater to the Upper Keys. The next production, “Almost, Maine,” is scheduled to run Feb. 27 through March 9. The romantic comedy is written by John Cariani and features nine short plays that explore the themes of love and loss in a remote “town” called Almost, Maine. Performances take place at the Murray E. Founded as a small community group in 1944, the Marathon Community Theatre, located at 5101 Overseas Highway, has grown into a vibrant hub for memorable and popular performances by talented local residents. Productions include Jones Hope Wooten's comedy "Always a Bridesmaid," concluding its winter run Feb. 6-8 with an 8 p.m. curtain. The show "Nunsense" is to run from March 13 through April 12 at 8 p.m., with a March 30 matinee at 3 p.m. This musical comedy follows five nuns from The Little Sisters of Hoboken as they stage a talent show to raise money to bury their sisters, who tragically died from botulism after eating tainted soup. Originally built in 1829 as a carriage house, Key West’s Red Barn Theatre at 319 Duval St., rear, has hosted modern-era performances since 1981. This season’s lineup features “Ms. Holmes and Ms. Watson, Apt. 2B” (through Feb. 22), a darkly comic, feminist reimagining of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; “Brooklyn Laundry” (March 4-29), John Patrick Shanley’s poignant and funny exploration of three sisters and a Brooklyn laundry owner; and “Short Attention Span Theatre: Alternative Facts” (April 8 through May 3), an audience favorite showcasing eclectic short plays with surprising twists. Entertaining audiences for over 80 years at its 310 Wall St. location near Key West’s Mallory Square, the Waterfront Playhouse presents the Florida premiere of the newly published farce “The Angel Next Door” through Feb. 8. Fringe Theater Key West, dedicated to art-house productions in intimate settings, will stage most of the season’s performances at The Armory, 600 White St. The lineup features “Goodnight Oscar” running Feb. 18 through March 1, a darkly comic drama about actor and composer Oscar Levant's genius, mental health struggles and unforgettable 1958 Tonight Show appearance. The Tennessee Williams Theatre, at 5901 College Road on the campus of the College of the Florida Keys, is a nonprofit venue showcasing Broadway national tours, performing artists and theatrical experiences. The Studios of Key West supports artists, inspires creativity and builds community. The three-day event — attracting up to 3,000 participants annually — is to be held at the West Martello Garden Club, 1100 Atlantic Blvd. at Higgs Beach, daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s free to all attendees.

“We are the only orchid festival and show in the Florida Keys,” said Sharon Douglas, second vice-president of the Key West Orchid Society. “This is the one event where orchid lovers can get all of their orchid needs met without driving to Miami.”

Activities are to include a blooming orchid exhibit, during which attendees can vote for “Best of Show” and take a guided tour, and daily raffles of blooming orchids.

Vendors include famed international grower Ten Shin Orchid Nursery of Taiwan. Attendees can pre-order a Ten Shin orchid at info@tenshinorchids.com for pick-up during the festival. Orders must be placed by Monday, Feb. 3.

Regional Florida vendors include Quest Orchids, Soroa Orchids, Mac’s Orchids, Jim-N-I Orchids and J & J Unique Orchids; with OFE International showcasing orchid growing supplies; Orchids 365 selling unique orchid accessories and gifts; and new vendor Orchidique with orchid-inspired jewelry and crafts. The Monroe County Extension Service Master Gardeners also are participating.

The festival is organized by the Key West Orchid Society, whose purpose is to enhance the knowledge of orchids and their culture in the unique environment of the Florida Keys.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days, tour participants can venture beyond the walls and ornamental fences surrounding featured homes in the Flagler Avenue area of Key West.

The five stops include lovingly maintained large and small gardens with exotic palms, water features and pools, serene settings and vivid tropical plants.

Garden Club docents are to be on hand at each location, sharing detailed information with tour participants about the on-site plants and other elements.

Tour tickets are $30 per person if purchased in advance at keywestgardenclub.com or at West Martello Tower, the garden club’s headquarters beside the Atlantic Ocean at 1100 Atlantic Blvd. On tour days tickets are to be available at the garden venues for $35 per person.

Since the 1950s, the not-for-profit Key West Garden Club has maintained and planted a garden in the ruins of the Civil War–era West Martello Tower, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All plants are donated and cared for by club members and volunteers.

Today West Martello is the backdrop for spectacular orchids and bromeliads, mature fruit trees, indigenous plants, a colorful butterfly garden, a prehistoric garden and a peace park among other attractions. The garden is open free of charge from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except major holidays.

All tour proceeds support West Martello Gardens and civic gardening projects.

Scheduled each Tuesday from Jan. 28 through Feb. 25, the lectures begin at 6:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 200 Greene St. The fully accredited museum is an internationally recognized center for the excavation, preservation, research and exhibition of New World maritime artifacts.

Its unparalleled collection of 17th-century maritime and shipwreck antiquities includes priceless treasure and artifacts from the Spanish galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita, sunk in 1622; and objects from the English merchant slave ship Henrietta Marie, lost in 1700. The heritage of the three vessels, each discovered and excavated in waters off Key West under the auspices of museum founder Mel Fisher, is chronicled in the facility’s permanent exhibitions. 

The lecture series starts Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a showing of the mini documentary “Before Juneteenth: Florida’s Emancipations.” The film is paired with commentary about Key West’s unique role in the mid-1800s evolution of emancipation by Corey Malcom, Ph.D., lead historian for the Florida Keys History Center and the museum’s longtime director of archaeology. 

The following Tuesday, Feb. 4, is to feature scholar, artist and activist Dinizulu Gene Tinnie, discussing the Cuban slaving vessel Amistad, its seizure by captured Africans and its relevance to the maritime slave trade. The trade — including Key West’s place in the U.S. Navy’s anti-slavery efforts — is examined in the museum’s “Spirits of the Passage” exhibit.

A rare 16th-century shipwreck takes center stage Tuesday, Feb. 11, when Malcom guides an informal tour of a new exhibition titled “Uncovering the Santa Clara.” Malcom, who led the museum’s team that identified and excavated the 1564 vessel, also plans to display Santa Clara artifacts during a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility’s conservation laboratory. Carol Tedesco, author of “Treasure Coins of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha & the Santa Margarita” and other shipwreck-related books and archaeological “mystery” articles, is to speak Tuesday, Feb. 18. With a focus on silver coins and other intriguing artifacts, she will discuss the similarities and differences in Spanish Colonial shipwreck cargoes based on year, geography and twists of fate.

Finally, a presentation by members of the “golden crew” that found and recovered the 1622 sunken galleons Atocha and Margarita is scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 25. Tom Ford, Syd Jones, Andy Matroci and Vince Trotta will share their personal recollections of one of the greatest discoveries of Spanish Colonial sunken treasure in the world.

Set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, the free-admission show is to feature colorful booths lining the quay at Truman Waterfront Park. The site, backdropped by the blue water that surrounds the island city, stands at the end of Southard Street beyond Truman Annex.

Presented by the acclaimed nonprofit Key West Art Center, the show is to feature unique creations by 120 artists and crafters from around the United States and Canada. After decades of presenting separate art and craft shows during Key West’s typically balmy “winter” season, the center combined them in 2024 and continues that combined format this year.

The event is juried to ensure high-quality offerings and features a blend of local and visiting talents — all gathered to display their work to connoisseurs and collectors in Key West’s subtropical setting.

Attendees can expect to find two- and three-dimensional works in media including watercolor, oils, acrylics, sculpture, ceramics, collage and photography. Pieces may be executed in styles ranging from traditional to contemporary to tropical.

Crafters and skilled artisans are to showcase creations in glass and fabric, jewelry, pottery, metal, wood and more.

Planned highlights also include a popup showcase of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts’ 2025 “Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys” mural, consisting of nearly 100 small individual canvases decorated by Keys artists.

In addition, attendees can enjoy art and craft demonstrations by festival participants, taste treats from food trucks, a shaded patron comfort area and seating along the water.

Proceeds from the festival are to help support the Key West Art Center’s programs and maintain the historic 301 Front St. building that houses its gallery.

The free-admission performances are set for Saturdays at 4 p.m. Dates for 2025 are Jan. 25, Feb. 22, March 29 and April 19.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, and enjoy the Keys’ famed sunset while soaking up the sounds of Sousa and other popular concert band music.

Most performances are scheduled at the amphitheater in Islamorada’s Founders Park, mile marker 87 bayside. The Feb. 22 show, however, is to be held on the lawn at Key Largo’s Peace Park at the Murray Nelson Government Center, mile marker 102 bayside.

More than 40 volunteer band members, ages 18 to 80, are directed through each performance’s repertoire — a compilation of traditional concert band music, popular music, show tunes and marches.

Each performance features interactive activities for the audience as well as some special guests.

The Jan. 25 performance at Founders Park, themed “Afternoon Delight,” is to be filled with upbeat animal-themed music along with other classic and pop favorites. Audience members are encouraged to bring their pets to strut their stuff in the annual pet parade. Animal Care Coalition is to bring adoptable pets to the performance.

The theme for the Feb. 22 show in Key Largo is “Kokomo Key,” featuring Florida songs and tropical music, a steel pan demonstration and a conch shell blowing contest. The Mangrove Swamp Band is to be the special musical guest, and REEF Environmental Education Foundation is to bring an educational marine touch tank.

The March 29 concert, back at Founders Park, is themed “Twilight Tunes” and features movie and show tunes. There is to be a special Vivaldi’s Four Seasons sensory experience, breakout ensembles from the Community Concert Band, and performances by special musical guest Ukelele Joy. Plans call for free ice cream pops to add to the festive atmosphere.

A selection of “Conch Classics” rounds out the spring performance season April 19, featuring international music throughout time. Student musicians from Keys school band programs are to be special musical guests, and audience members are asked to bring a favorite stuffed animal to share treats during a Teddy Bear Picnic.

At each concert, play-along percussion instruments are to be provided for attendees to make music of their own.

New band members are always welcome to join, even if they are only in the area for a few weeks.

Presented by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association, the family-friendly community feast is set for 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park, overlooking the water at the end of Southard Street.

The savory seafood menu is to feature fresh grilled Florida spiny lobster, peel-and-eat Key West pink shrimp, stone crab claws, smoked fish dip with crackers, fried local fish, lobster bisque and more. All seafood is to be prepared and served by Keys fishermen and their families.

Traditional regional favorites such as conch chowder and conch fritters also await attendees. Other edibles include hot dogs, hamburgers, sweet flan and Key lime pie. Beverages ranging from soft drinks to beer and wine to island-style cocktails are to be available for purchase.

Plans also call for nonstop live music by regional musicians and bands. Entertainers are to include headliner Maggie Baugh, the Marshall Morlock Band, students from the Bahama Village Music Program, the Double Down Band and Uncle Rico, among others.

Vendor booths are to offer arts and crafts themed to reflect marine life and the Keys’ flourishing fishing community, as well as other locally handcrafted items. Additional booths are to feature educational information from regional conservation organizations, while an eco-activity area is planned for kids.

Admission is $10 per adult, good for both days, and includes entry in a raffle for $250 worth of seafood. Children under age 12 are admitted free to the family-friendly event, as are veterans and active-duty military members with military I.Ds.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association’s sustainable fisheries management programs and scholarships for Florida Keys students.

The event is set for 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Boondocks Grille & Draft House at mile marker 27.5 on Ramrod Key. 

José Wejebe was a Florida Keys charter captain whose top-rated television fishing show, “Spanish Fly,” inspired a generation of viewers before his untimely death in a 2012 plane crash. 

The foundation that bears his name was established to honor Wejebe’s legacy through marine conservation, supporting those facing life-impacting challenges and making fishing dreams come true.

The festival’s entertainment roster features musicians and bands that play a leading role in the Keys’ live music scene including Circa 22, Michelle Dravis, Jesse and Jill, Adrienne Z and Gary Hempsey.

In addition to enjoying nonstop music, festival attendees can bid on a wide range of goods, services and experiential offerings at live and silent auctions. The event’s other attractions include local vendors offering their wares, raffles, miniature golf and a bounce house and face painting for children.

Pre-festival kick-off parties are to take place at two Marathon locations Friday evening, Jan. 10. Attendees can gather from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dockside at Boot Key Harbor, 35 Sombrero Blvd., for appearances by the West of Galway duo and the Police Pipe and Drum Corps of Florida. The Police Pipe and Drum Corps is then to make its way to play at the second kick-off party beginning at 7 p.m. at Keys Fisheries, 3502 Gulfview Ave.

The weekend festival is to be filled with Celtic musicians including Scottish band Albannach; the West of Galway duo; the high-energy five-piece Irish band Jamison; and Ireland’s four-sister group, The Screaming Orphans.

Weekend festival highlights include performances by the Police Pipe and Drum Corps; a Highland Athletics competition, including the nation’s only sanctioned women’s Scottish Highland Games challenge; sheepherding demonstrations; Irish and Scottish dancing; a Florida Keys Art in the Park art show; and a Children’s Glen with pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, games and more activities.

Other attractions include Celtic merchandise, offerings by local vendors and booths representing various Scottish clans. Rounding out the weekend’s festivities are authentic Celtic food and beverages including high tea in the Iona Tea Garden, vendors offering Scottish eggs and fish and chips, and a selection of Keys food vendors.

Tickets are available for a special Afternoon Tea at 3 p.m. Saturday with Mary Queen of Scots that includes a lunch plate, tea and scones.

Non-enthusiastic runners can register to participate in the Zero K Nessie Fun Run, a “run” so short that it isn’t even measured. All registered participants are to receive a T-shirt and medal.

Those seeking to delve deeper into Celtic culture or celebrate their own Scottish or Irish heritage can take advantage of workshops in the Celtic Crossroads area. Participants can learn about Celtic history, literature, food, dance, clothing, storytelling and even how to play bagpipes.

The festival takes place at Marathon Community Park, mile marker 49 oceanside. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The event supports Hammock House at St. Columba Episcopal Church that provides free after-school care and summer and school break camps for children in Marathon.

Single-day admission tickets for Saturday or Sunday are $12 per person, while a two-day pass is $17. Children age 12 and under are admitted free with a paying adult. Parking is free.

January 2025

The Key West Literary Seminar (Jan. 9-12; kwls.org) presents some 20 leading American and international writers, exploring the topic of “Family” in solo and paired readings, lectures, and panel discussions. The keynote speaker is John Irving, renowned author of “The World According to Garp” among other standouts. Headquartered at Key West’s San Carlos Institute, the seminar includes Sunday afternoon presentations that are open to the public.

The Florida Keys Celtic Festival (Jan. 11-12; floridakeyscelticfestival.com) enables visitors to experience the sights and sounds of the Scottish Highlands and the Emerald Isle in Marathon in the Middle Florida Keys. Attractions include live music by Albannach, The Screaming Orphans, Jamison and West of Galway, plus bagpipers, Irish dancers, highland athletic games, sheepherding demonstrations, authentic Celtic food, children's games, vendors and more.

The Southernmost Regatta (Jan. 20-25; southernmostregatta.com) brings top sailing teams from around the world to compete in the azure waters off Key West, showcasing colorful sails and avid sportsmanship during five consecutive days of racing. Competition is open to One Design and ORC Racing/Cruising Keelboats. Spectators can watch the races from various waterfront venues.

The Key West Half Marathon & Runfest (Jan. 18-19; keywesthalfmarathon.com) attracts thousands of runners from around the U.S. and other countries to compete in a top U.S. winter half marathon, run beside the Atlantic Ocean, and enjoy Key West’s typically balmy “winter” weather. The half marathon takes place Jan. 19, with shorter races and additional events rounding out the schedule. 

Mile 0 Fest (Jan. 21-25, mile0fest.com) features more than 60 celebrated musicians and bands from the Americana and “Red Dirt” genres, all performing in subtropical Key West. Attendees can enjoy five nights of open-air main stage shows at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, plus acoustic jams and songwriter swaps at other island locations.

The 33rd annual Kelly McGillis Classic International Women’s & Girl’s Flag Football Championship (Jan. 21-27; iwffa.com) in Key West is expected to draw more than 30 teams of women and girls representing the U.S. and countries around the world for flag football games along with team-building activities and social gatherings. The popular event is named for McGillis, the “Top Gun” movie actress and former Key West resident.

The Island Boat Show (Jan. 24-26; islandboatshow.com), billed as the Florida Keys’ premier boat show, is held on the grounds of Island Community Church in Islamorada. Planned attractions include top boat brands and dealers, a large silent auction, food and drink vendors, and nautical merchandise for the entire family. 

The Big Pine & Lower Keys Nautical Expo (Jan. 25-26; lowerkeyschamber.com) brings more than 100 vendors to Big Pine Key for a large marine marketplace event. Attendees can find values on gear and everything imaginable for boating, fishing, diving and more, plus marine-influenced clothing, art, jewelry and crafts, live entertainment, food and beverages. The event takes place on the grounds of the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce visitor center.

February 2025

The Winter Star Party (Jan. 27-Feb. 2; scas.org/winter-star-party) draws several hundred astronomers and astro-imagers from around the world to view southern constellations, comets and stars in the Lower Florida Keys’ clear night skies — virtually the only place in the continental U.S. where they can be viewed. Lectures, programs and other attractions round out the event that’s held beside the Atlantic Ocean at Scout Key.

The Upper Keys Garden Walk (Feb. 15; gardenclubupperkeys.org) is a unique self-guided tour that showcases beautiful private garden properties in the Upper Keys. The event also includes an art show and Garden Market.

The Florida Keys Seafood Festival (Feb. 15-16; floridakeysseafoodfestival.com) at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park features the freshest Keys seafood — all caught, cleaned, prepared and served by local fishermen. Other attractions include live music, an eco-discovery zone for kids, and vendors selling Keys-made wares and art. 

Presidential Families Weekend (Feb. 15-17; trumanlittlewhitehouse.org/foundation/events) celebrates Presidents’ Day weekend at the state of Florida’s only presidential site, the Harry S. Truman Little White House. Events include a panel discussion with presidential descendants, performances of the stage production, “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!” and a President’s Day cookout. 

The Sombrero Beach Run (Feb. 21-23; sombrerobeachrun.org) in Marathon attracts several hundred people for a weekend of running and sunning. The running event is held Saturday, Feb. 22, at Sombrero Beach, located at the end of Sombrero Beach Road at mile marker 50. Awards are given to overall finishers in a 5k walk and 5k and 10k runs. Those completing the event’s 15k challenge receive special gifts. Celebrations and beach activities fill the weekend.

The Key West Art & Craft Festival (Feb. 22-23; keywestartcenter.com) is a juried show that draws scores of artists and artisans displaying their creations. Vendor booths are set up along the harbor at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park, and the popular event also features artist demonstrations.

The Gigantic Nautical Market (Feb. 22-23; rotarynauticalmarket.com) in Islamorada brings bargains on everything nautical including boats, dive gear, furnishings for boat and home, art, clothing, fishing gear and more from hundreds of vendors. Plans call for as many as 18 food trucks on the grounds of Islamorada’s Founders Park during the event.

March 2025

The Conch Shell Blowing Contest (March 8; oirf.org) has been a Key West tradition for over 60 years. Held at the Oldest House Museum and Garden, the unique challenge celebrates the historic importance of the conch mollusk in the Keys and features contestants from toddlers to seniors attempting to make “music” using fluted conch shells.

The Original Marathon Seafood Festival (March 8-9; marathonseafoodfestival.com) lures thousands of seafood lovers to the Middle Keys to savor Keys-harvested seafood including lobster, stone crab, shrimp and fish prepared and served by Florida Keys fishermen. Additional attractions at the family-friendly feast include musical acts, raffles, prizes, a kids’ area and vendors offering artisan wares.

The second annual St. Paddy’s Island Run 5k/10k (March 16; runsignup.com/Race/FL/Islamorada/StPattysIslandRun) is hosted by Florida Keys Brewing Company in Islamorada. Runners are to receive a free beer, finisher’s medal and T-shirt — and can enjoy a St. Paddy’s party in the beer garden after the race.

NAS Key West Southernmost Air Spectacular (March 29-30; keywestairshow.com) brings high-flying action to Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Field near Key West, with aerial demonstrations by military and civilian performers including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team.

April 2025

The 7 Mile Bridge Run (April 5; 7mbrun.com) attracts a field of 1,500 runners to the city of Marathon each year to compete on a course across one of the world’s longest segmental bridges, the centerpiece of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway.

The Florida Keys Island Fest (April 5-6; islamoradachamber.com/island-fest) highlights nearly 100 artists and crafters in a juried art show, along with live music, homemade boat races and a “Taste of Islamorada” competition for foodies. The 33rd annual event takes place at Islamorada’s Founders Park.

The Historic Days Celebration (April 3-6); keywesthistoricdayscelebration.com) highlights the Key West Woman’s Club’s 110th anniversary with history-focused tours, presentations, and panel discussions at the club’s headquarters, the Hellings Curry Museum, and other island locations. Receptions are planned featuring appetizers prepared from recipes in the “Key West Woman’s Club Cookbook,” while other events include a High Tea of Years Gone By.

The 43rd annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration (April 18-27; conchrepublic.com) commemorates the Florida Keys’ symbolic 1982 secession from the United States and rebirth as the independent and eccentric Conch Republic. Events are held in Key West and typically include a parade along Duval Street, a mock battle at sea with tall ships, sunset sailing cruises, parties and the wacky Great Conch Republic Drag Race.

May 2025 

The Key West Songwriters Festival (April 30-May 4; facebook.com/keywestsongwritersfest) features America’s foremost performing songwriters and artists at dozens of concerts staged in intimate, audience-friendly Key West settings. Typically included are more than 50 shows and 200-plus country and pop hitmakers. Now in its 29th year, the festival revolves around five days and nights where live music bliss introduces crowds to the faces, voices and stories behind the songs.

The I.CARE Trash Derby and Festival (May 1-4; icaretrashderby.com) includes two days of trash collection by scuba divers and on-land participants, who compete for prizes for the largest hauls at cleanup locations throughout the Keys. Divers can register with their favorite dive shop while non-divers can assemble teams for land-based debris removal. A public festival May 4 at Islamorada’s Founders Park celebrates the cleanup with award ceremonies, live music, food and booths by Florida Keys conservation organizations.

 June 2025 

The College of the Florida Keys Swim Around Key West (June 14); swimaroundkeywest.org) is a 12.5-mile endurance swim, open to individuals and relay teams, around the island of Key West through Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico waters. Organized by The College of the Florida Keys, it’s billed as the only sanctioned, insured and U.S. Coast Guard-permitted swimming race around Key West. Associated events include shorter open-water swims. 

Key West Pride (June 22-29; gaykeywestfl.com/pride/) features a lively roster of fun for Key West’s LGBTQ visitors, friends and allies on the island known for its accepting “One Human Family” atmosphere. Events typically include pool parties, late-night drag shows and soirees, on-the-water adventures, a street fair, pageants and a colorful parade.

July 2025

The Key Lime Festival (July 3-7; keylimefestival.com) in Key West celebrates the world’s most sensational citrus with a bountiful array of festivities across the island where Key lime pie was conceived. Over five days, lovers of the lime can indulge in activities including a gravity-defying Key lime pie drop competition from the top of the Key West Lighthouse, a Key lime cocktail sip and stroll, Key lime brunches and dinners, and the world-famous Key lime pie eating championship set for July 4.

Celebrating Freedom Parade & Fireworks (July 4; 305-451-1414) in Key Largo is the Upper Keys area’s 49th annual salute to America’s independence. The fun kicks off with a midmorning community parade featuring patriotic floats along the Florida Keys Overseas Highway. The Celebrating Freedom event with live music and vendors takes place in the evening, culminating in a magnificent fireworks show over Blackwater Sound.

The 41st annual Underwater Music Festival (July 11-12; lowerkeyschamber.com), a sub-sea concert staged to promote environmentally responsible diving and reef protection, begins with a July 11 welcome event at Mote Marine Laboratory’s Summerland Key facility. On July 12, divers and snorkelers submerge at Looe Key Reef alongside costumed characters “playing” faux instruments. Participants listen to ocean-themed music that’s piped underwater, interspersed with messages about ways to enjoy the underwater world while minimizing environmental impacts.

Hemingway Days (July 22-27; hemingwaydays.com); honors the literary legacy and Key West lifestyle of Ernest Hemingway, the American literary giant who lived and wrote on the island for most of the 1930s. Events include the legendary Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, the wacky Running of the Bulls, a commemoration of the 126th anniversary of Hemingway's birth, a museum exhibit, a marlin tournament, a 5k run and a street fair.

August 2025

At Key West Lobsterfest (Aug. 7-10; keywestlobsterfest.com), seafood lovers can chow down on Florida’s clawless lobster. The tasty “feast-ival” features a savory schedule of events ranging from a traditional lobster boil to a pub crawl, pool parties, a brunch, and the lively annual street fair and concert Aug. 9.

The City Bikes Key Largo Triathlon (Aug. 15-17; gameonraceevents.com) set at Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, brings athletes of all ages to compete in Olympic and sprint distance triathlon and duathlon races as well as an Olympic distance aquabike race. 

Just a Few Friends Key West (Aug. 29-Sept. 1; justafewfriendskeywest.com) is a memorial celebration honoring Key West’s favorite son, Jimmy Buffett, on the second anniversary of his Sept. 1, 2023 passing. The weekend is filled with tours, bar crawls, rum tastings and music events. The highlight is the Second Line Parade along Duval Street, culminating in a free music festival at Truman Waterfront Park with local and national entertainment.

September 2025 

Womenfest Key West (Sept. 3-7; gaykeywestfl.com/womenfest) is Key West’s popular annual festival for lesbians and their friends — designed to enable singles, couples and groups of women to experience the atmosphere of openness and acceptance that has made Key West an internationally acclaimed lesbian and gay vacation destination. Activities range from beach parties, snorkeling and sunset cruises to live entertainment and more.

The Swim for Alligator Lighthouse (Sept. 13; swimalligatorlight.com) is a world-class, 8-mile open-water swim to the iconic Alligator Reef Lighthouse and back to shore in Islamorada. The unique and challenging experience can be conquered solo or on 2-, 3- or 4-person relay teams. Proceeds from the race go toward the effort to fully restore the 152-year old lighthouse. 

October 2025

Taste the Keys (Oct. 1-31; tastethekeys.com) provides a culinary journey through Key Largo and the Upper Keys to experience delectable Florida Keys cuisine on weekly foodie tours by trolley, culminating in a cook-off competition event. Participating locations include Skipper’s Dockside, Playa Largo, The Catch, Gus’ Grille at Reefhouse Resort & Marina, Mrs. Mac’s and many more.

REEF Fest (Oct. 16-19; reef.org/reeffest), hosted by the Reef Environmental Education Foundation in Key Largo, enables ocean lovers to celebrate their love of marine life and learn about the latest in conservation through dive, snorkel and kayak trips along with ocean-themed seminars and social events.

Key West Fantasy Fest (Oct. 17-26; fantasyfest.com) is an annual 10-day costuming and masking extravaganza that features dozens of exciting and exotic events. The theme for 2025 is “Bedtime Stories & Magical Monsters.” The fun begins with the exuberant Goombay Festival and continues with standouts including the Royal Coronation of the 2025 Fantasy Fest king and queen, lavish Headdress Ball, wacky and wonderful Key West Pet Masquerade, colorful Captain Morgan Masquerade March, and the world-famous Key West Fantasy Fest Parade set for Oct. 25. 

The Zombie Bike Ride (Oct. 19; zombiebikeride.com) features thousands of “the bicycling dead” in a lighthearted pre-Halloween trek along Key West’s Atlantic Ocean shoreline and streets. Visiting and local adults, kids and even a few pets dress in offbeat zombie garb, ragged finery and scary face paint for the spooky spectacle, which also includes “Zombieland” pre-ride festivities and a rollicking after party.

November 2025

The Race World Offshore Key West World Championship (Nov. 2-9); raceworldoffshore.com/key-west) brings the world’s top powerboat teams to compete in high-speed races in the waters surrounding the island city. Activities include a parade of powerboats and teams down Duval Street, parties, concerts, and viewing from the Race Village at Truman Waterfront Park and from waterfront hotels and restaurants. The spectator-friendly course layout means fans can watch from vantage points breathtakingly close to the action.

The Key West Film Festival (November dates to be announced; keywestff.com), named one of the top 25 coolest film fests in the world by Moviemaker magazine, includes screenings of as many as 75 films, panel discussions, parties and the presentation of awards including the Golden Key for emerging talent and excellence in costume design.

Key West Holiday Fest (Nov 26-Dec. 31; keywestholidayfest.com)  includes a merry range of celebrations during Key West’s busy holiday season, starting the night before Thanksgiving and ending on New Year’s Eve. Events traditionally include the lighting of the Harbor Walk of Lights, tours of historic inns, a lighted boat parade, festive Old Town Trolley and Conch Train tours to see neighborhoods elaborately decorated with holiday lights, seasonal artisan markets and bazaars, and quirky New Year’s Eve “drops” that spoof New York City’s annual Times Square “ball drop.”

Experience a Waterfront Winter Wonderland (Dec. 12-27; waterfrontwinterwonderland.com) at Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater in Truman Waterfront Park. Despite the island’s typically balmy holiday breezes, the festive grounds “chill” with an ice skating rink and “snow” showers. The family-friendly event features rides including a Ferris wheel, a carousel, swings and giant slides. Visits with Santa and live music add to the holiday atmosphere. 

New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) in Key West includes a series of delightfully quirky “drops” that spoof New York City’s annual Times Square “ball drop.” Standout celebrations to welcome the New Year include the midnight “drop” of a female impersonator in a spangled super-sized red high heel shoe outside the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex; the “drop” of a gigantic manmade conch shell atop the roof of Sloppy Joe’s bar; the lowering of a “pirate wench” from atop the mast of the tall ship America 2.0 at Schooner Wharf Bar; and the midnight “landing” of a replica Pan Am aircraft carrying a costumed flight attendant at First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery.

The lively open-air festival is expected to draw more than 60 solo performers and bands, all representing the musical styles that blend elements of rock, country and the American roots tradition. The event is named for Key West’s geographical location at the beginning of U.S. Highway 1, which is marked with a green “MILE 0” sign.

Attendees can enjoy five nights of main stage shows at Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater, located at 21 Quay Road, beside Truman Waterfront Park. Intimate acoustic jams and songwriter swaps at other island locations are to complement the main-stage action.

The musical lineup features groups and bands ranging from emerging artists to critically acclaimed Americana and “Red Dirt” stars. As well as the genre standouts already listed, performers include Stoney LaRue, Wade Bowen, 49 Winchester, Django Walker, Bri Bagwell, Adam Hood, Taylor Hunnicutt and other notables.

Now in its eighth year, Mile 0 Fest has become a popular musical gathering acclaimed for its laid-back Key West atmosphere, balmy subtropical weather and the opportunity for up-close interaction with featured performers.

While enjoying the onstage shows, audience members can purchase offerings from local food trucks, mobile bars and other vendors. As well as the musical experience, they can choose to participate in Key West activities ranging from a fishing derby to offbeat “Tipsy Tikis” cocktail cruises.

Headquartered at Key West’s historic San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St., the seminar is to feature some 20 writers of novels, essays, poetry and more. They are to discuss aspects of the theme ranging from human connections to family dysfunction, and ways interpersonal ties shape people and infuse the stories they tell.

Among featured presenters are Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Harding, whose multigenerational family sagas include “This Other Eden;” American Book Award winner Emily Raboteau, author of “Lessons for Survival: Mothering Against the Apocalypse” among others; Dani Shapiro, who has penned bestsellers including “Inheritance” and “Signal Fires”; S.A. Cosby, known for his “southern noir” crime dramas lauded by Barack Obama; Malinda Lo, whose most recent work is the LGBTQ coming-of-age novel “A Scatter of Light”; and Nathan Hill, whose highly acclaimed novel “Wellness” explores contemporary marriage.

The seminar begins Thursday, Jan. 9, with an evening keynote presentation by John Irving, internationally renowned author of literary standouts including “The World According to Garp,” “The Cider House Rules” and “A Prayer for Owen Meany.”

Subsequent days feature solo and paired readings, lectures, panel discussions, book signings, and receptions at historic sites where attendees and authors can mingle. Boat parades from Key Largo to Key West are to illuminate the waters around the island chain, featuring decorated vessels ranging from majestic tall ships to fishing craft and tiny skiffs. Captains and crews typically “deck the hulls” with everything from traditional lights and greenery to offbeat Yuletide salutes.

Decorated vessels ranging from dinghies and schooners to fishing boats and yachts stage a holiday cruise through the Stock Island waters around the Perry Hotel & Marina. The free-to-watch boat parade is presented by the Rotary Club of Key West and the Perry, with pre-parade activities beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the lawn at the Perry, 7001 Shrimp Road. Standout celebrations Tuesday, Dec. 31, include the midnight “drop” of female impersonator Randy Roberts in a spangled super-sized red high heel shoe. Thousands of people are expected to gather outside the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex, located at 724 Duval St., as Roberts takes center stage at the annual extravaganza.

Roberts is best known for his live vocals and riveting show at Key West’s La Te Da Cabaret, where he depicts iconic female performers including Cher and Bette Midler. He has also appeared on “America’s Got Talent.”

Roberts is to entertain the audience while perched high above the crowd in the famed red shoe. In addition, spectators can enjoy a sizzling streetside show beginning at 9 p.m. and featuring local and national performers.

Just before midnight, the shoe carrying Roberts is to be lowered from the complex’s balcony to the accompaniment of cheers and applause from the crowds below — landing as midnight strikes and 2025 begins.

A 30-ton snow mountain is to attract kids wearing boots and mittens with their shorts and T-shirts. The celebration’s centerpiece, a 35-foot-tall holiday tree with “magical” snow blowing through its branches, is to be lighted at 6 p.m.

The annual holiday parade is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. with floats, antique cars, and of course Santa himself.

Other attractions include musical and dance performances on an outdoor stage throughout the event, as well as contests to choose “Little Miss Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Mister Gingerbread Man.” Photos with Santa are to add to the evening’s appeal.

The holiday gift bazaar is to be full of unique offerings including jewelry and crafts created by local artisans, holiday baskets and tempting food items.

The much-anticipated online holiday ornament auction is to feature over 60 one-of-a-kind, hand-painted pieces created and donated by local artists. The ornaments will be judged and on display during the festival and can be purchased by online auction bids. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the local arts community.

Attendees also can purchase delicious food and beverages from festival vendors, plus tempting desserts and coffee at Santa’s Sweet Shoppe.  

Well-behaved four-legged mutts can strut their stuff in the Santa Paws Pet Parade and vie for prizes for best doggone holiday attire or best trick. Entry in the pet parade is free.

The event was a highlight of the 10-day Fantasy Fest costuming and masking celebration that continues through Sunday.

Produced by the Key West Business Guild, the headdress competition drew more than a dozen entries and offered spectators a unique blend of entertainment, pageantry and design ingenuity.

Gary Marion, also known as Key West’s iconic drag queen Sushi, took first place for “Martian Day of the Dead.” The elaborate ensemble featured a skeletal mask and towering multicolored headdress bedecked with flowers, big-eyed space creatures and grinning green skulls.

Second place went to Guy Hermelin for “DJ Time Warp,” a massive creation topped with a supersized “boombox” and stylized concert speakers. 

The third-place winner was Elaine Shelby for “Wicked Dragon Lady,” an exotic entry inspired by her travels to Asian countries.

The evening starred acclaimed female impersonator Randy Roberts as master of ceremonies, with DJ Rude Girl overseeing musical selections. Local performers offered stellar entertainment between headdress presentations.

“The Headdress Ball is Fantasy Fest’s premier LGBTQ event,” said Rob Dougherty, executive director of the guild. “It was an amazing night filled with talent and creativity.”

 The event benefits the not-for-profit guild and its work in supporting Key West’s gay and gay-friendly enterprises, local community, and position as an internationally recognized LGBTQ vacation spot.

Staged at Keys Fisheries Market and Marina, located on 35th Street gulfside in Marathon, the munch-a-thon begins promptly at noon. Entrants must register and be present by 11 a.m.

Contestants compete to crack, clean and eat all the meat from 25 stone crab claws in the fastest time.

Although entrants are provided with industrial-strength shell crackers, some choose to employ an effective method that’s popular among Keys locals — smacking the rounded area of the claw’s shell with the back of a large serving spoon or a simple butter knife.

Prizes such as overnight stays and passes to Keys attractions and eateries are to be awarded to the top three finishers and top teams.

If a tie occurs, the tied contestants must face off in an additional 10-claw competition to determine the winner.

Interested crab consumers are encouraged to register early to secure a contestant spot at the table. Individual entry fee is $50 and two-person teams can register for $100. Competitors must be at least 18 years old.

Proceeds from the event are to benefit a Marathon-based charity.

The Keys are Florida's top supplier of the succulent crustacean claws, considered a renewable resource because of the crabs’ ability to regrow harvested claws after being returned to the water. Every year, about 2 million pounds of stone crab claws are steamed, cracked and served at local markets and restaurants or distributed around the nation.

The lavish parade is the highlight of the Oct. 18-27 Fantasy Fest costuming and masking celebration, themed “It’s a 90s Neon Cosmic Carnival!”

With a route through Key West’s historic downtown, the parade typically includes several dozen decorated and motorized floats — many towering high above the watching crowds and featuring music, lighting effects and oversized moving elements. Accompanying them are island-style bands, marching groups and dancers garbed in elaborate sequined and feathered costumes.

The spirit of “Robert the Doll,” a 3-foot-tall sailor doll with a century-long history of eerie exploits, is to lead the parade. Once the companion of a Key West artist, the actual doll now resides in a glass case at Fort East Martello Museum — but his presence is to loom large in the parade alongside co-grand marshal and paranormal expert David Sloan.

Also an author and founder of the “Robert the Doll Experience” tour, Sloan penned the book “Robert the Doll” and is widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on his haunted subject.

Entrants in the 2024 parade are encouraged to draw inspiration from the festival theme, embracing neon-bright elements, classic carnival amusements, creatures from the cosmos and ’90s touchstones like Y2K hysteria and the era’s film favorites.

The culmination of Fantasy Fest’s 10-day roster of revelry, the parade is to begin at 7 p.m. at Southard and Whitehead streets. Glittering floats, bands and other participants are to travel down Whitehead toward the Gulf of Mexico, turn onto Front Street and then proceed a mile up Duval Street to the Atlantic Ocean.

Spectators can observe and applaud the extravaganza — and salute “Robert the Doll” — from designated streetside areas or reservation-only viewing parties at emporiums and historic sites along the route.

The exuberant street festival takes place in the island city’s Bahama Village neighborhood, settled in the early 1800s in part by Bahamians seeking a new island home.

The Goombay Festival marks the start of Key West’s Fantasy Fest, a 10-day costuming and masking celebration whose 2024 events continue through Sunday, Oct. 27.

Goombay’s high-energy action is centered on Petronia Street, just off Key West’s famed Duval Street in the heart of Bahama Village. Events are scheduled from noon to midnight both days.

Highlights are to include Friday night’s “Junkanoo Rush” and Saturday’s traditional Junkanoo parade of costumed marchers. Both are to feature the Bahamas’ renowned New Generation Cultural Group, with Saturday’s parade starting at 6 p.m. and following a route that includes portions of Duval and Petronia streets.

Each year Goombay attracts thousands of people ranging from national and international visitors to Florida Keys residents who have made attending the event a local tradition.

Attendees can savor the flavors of Caribbean and ethnic dishes offered by vendors, discover island-influenced arts and crafts, and dance in the streets to live music by popular Bahamian, Floridian and local musicians and bands.

The main entertainment stage is to be located at the corner of Emma and Olivia streets, with performers offering nonstop music in multiple genres. The entertainment lineup includes “soul man” Robert Albury, soca singer Hebrew Edwards and the Caribbean Explosion Band presenting reggae and soca rhythms.

Visitors to the museum, located at 200 Greene St., can view the “Spirits of the Passage” exhibition starting in October. It documents the slave trade, its legacy and its Florida Keys heritage — including Key West’s role in the U.S. Navy’s early anti-slavery effort — through educational panels, compelling large-scale graphics, sound recordings, and artifacts such as shackles used to restrain Africans during the sea voyage that carried them into slavery.

“Physical evidence of the voyage between Africa and the Americas, known as the Middle Passage, is rare worldwide and this collection is unique in the Americas,” said Madeleine Burnside, Ph.D., the museum’s chief curator and an authority on the maritime slave trade.

Discovered in 1973 by a team contracted to shipwreck salvor Mel Fisher, the Henrietta Marie is believed to be the world’s biggest source of tangible objects from the early years of the slave trade. A goldmine of information about the tragic yet pivotal period of African American history, it yielded countless artifacts that were recovered and subsequently conserved by museum experts.

The Key West exhibition informs museum visitors about the maritime slave trade from the early 1600s to the Civil War. Exhibit modules re-create portions of the Henrietta Marie and depict aspects that range from captured Africans’ homeland to a Jamaican plantation experience.

Artifacts on display include the Henrietta Marie’s bell, trade goods such as glass beads and iron bars that were bartered for human lives in Africa, weapons and ship fittings, and the shackles that evoke images of struggle and misery. 

Associated sound recording tell the stories of people including Olaudah Equiano of Nigeria, who was sold into slavery as a boy, eventually earned enough to buy his freedom and became an influential abolitionist; and Elizabeth Keckley, who was born into slavery, became such a talented seamstress that she was able to purchase her freedom, and eventually was dressmaker to Mary Todd Lincoln.

Also chronicled is Key West’s role as a base for the U.S. Navy’s anti-slavery squadron, and as a sanctuary for more than 1,400 Africans rescued by the squadron in 1860 from three slave ships captured in Cuban waters after the trade was outlawed.

In addition, the exhibit spotlights Key West’s African Cemetery, containing the graves of those who didn’t survive the brutal ocean crossing and died after their rescue; and the Cuban slave shipwreck Guerrero discovered in waters off Key Largo. 

While the Henrietta Marie was previously featured in a smaller exhibit that toured museums in the U.S. and Caribbean, “Spirits of the Passage” is the first to examine the maritime slave trade’s 250-year history and complexity against the background of its time. 

The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum opens at 10 a.m. daily and the last visitors are admitted at 4 p.m. Guided behind-the-scenes tours of the facility’s artifact conservation lab can be booked at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays.

Crafty carvers are to descend 30 feet beneath the surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Their task: transform the naturally buoyant pumpkins into masterful sculptures incorporating the theme of “Creatures from the Black Lagoon” — or, if they prefer, carve traditional jack-o’-lanterns’ toothy grins.

As dive knives pare away stringy shreds of pumpkin flesh, quick-swimming reef fish typically dart in for a closer look and a nibble before the tidbits float away.

Divers can join in to celebrate the fall harvest fun with Amoray Dive Resort, located at mile marker 104.5 bayside.

Carvers of the top three pumpkins chosen by judges win prizes, including a first-place dive trip for two.

The entry fee is $99 per certified diver for the two-location dive including tanks, weights and a pumpkin ready for carving. For $69 per person, snorkelers are welcome to observe the underwater carvers in action and explore the reef.

Check-in is at 12:30 p.m. and the boat departs at 1 p.m.

All activities are conducted under a Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary permit.

The offbeat costume competition for pets and their people is a traditional highlight of Key West’s Fantasy Fest celebration that takes place Friday,  Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 27.

A favorite event of kids and families, the animal extravaganza presented by Florida Keys Media is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater in Truman Waterfront Park, 21 E. Quay Road.

Contestants in the madcap masquerade are encouraged to design their costumes around the 2024 Fantasy Fest theme, “It’s a 90s Neon Cosmic Carnival!” — possibly portraying characters from the decade’s film classics like “101 Dalmations,” escapees from a furry funhouse or “space cadets” roaming the cosmos.

Each year, the event draws several dozen dogs, cats and avian contestants — plus the occasional rabbit, pot-bellied pig or snake. Entries typically range from simple pet-and-person duos to exuberant ensembles featuring multiple animals and humans performing skits or musical numbers.

A panel of judges evaluates the entries, awarding prizes in categories including top junior contestants, most exotic, best theme adaptation, best pet-owner look-alikes and overall winner.

Standouts in last year’s masquerade included a canine "Trojan horse" containing a doggy duo in Roman soldier uniforms, two "sailor" pugs with their human captain, and a family staging a "Smokey the Bear" skit with a 13-year-old Newfoundland portraying Smokey. 

Registration for competitors begins at 5 p.m. and the fee is $25 per category.

The promenade through Key West’s historic Old Town is a highlight of the island city’s Fantasy Fest celebration, a lavish annual costuming and masking festival set for Friday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 27.

The 2024 festival is themed “It’s a 90s Neon Cosmic Carnival!” with participants encouraged to embrace ’90s flashbacks, carnival antics and galactic glamor.

The march typically attracts bands and merrymakers wearing everything from feathered masks and finery to offbeat costumes inspired by the festival theme. Keys residents have a large presence in the event, sometimes called the locals’ parade, as they share the rowdy revelry with costumed visitors.

Free to enter and watch, the 2024 procession is to start at 5:30 p.m. from two points: Truman Avenue and Frances Street beside Old Town Wine & Spirits, and “Paparazzi Row” in the 1100 block of Fleming Street.

A pre-march party is to begin at 4 p.m. on “Paparazzi Row,” hosted by Alexander’s Guesthouse and Island House Resort, with a 360-degree photo booth and plenty of photo ops for costumed characters.

After the two routes converge, participants are to travel along picturesque Fleming and Simonton streets, stopping for libations at inns and other businesses along the way.

Led by jamming musicians, the promenade displays the exuberant spirit that characterizes Key West. As well as showing off their costuming creativity, revelers can bring whistles, noisemakers and percussion instruments to add to the excitement.

Spectators typically line the street to watch, applaud and sometimes join in before the march reaches its endpoint at Olivia and Duval streets. Multiple after-parties are planned to keep the fun going.

The madcap march is a prelude to the festival’s anticipated highlight, the Oct. 26 Key West Fantasy Fest Parade. Featuring dozens of glittering motorized floats, costumed walking groups and lively island-style bands, the parade is to proceed down Whitehead and Duval streets in front of more than 60,000 fantasy fans.

Since its inception in 2010, the pre-Halloween ride has become a tradition that typically features visiting and local adults, kids and even a few pets. Many wear "traditional" gory zombie garb paired with scary face and body paint, while others are creatively costumed as everything from evil clowns and skeletons to fearsome brides in ragged finery.

The spooky spectacle is to begin at 2 p.m. when “Zombieland” opens on the grounds of Fort East Martello Museum, a reputedly haunted historic site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd.

The afternoon’s attractions include food and drink vendors, as well as on-site face and body painters to help transform attendees into unnerving zombies. A Kids Zone is to offer age-appropriate activities, multiple bounce houses and fun.  

Often portrayed staggering through dark cemeteries, Key West’s zany zombies are to trade pedestrian power for pedal power at 6 p.m. Applauded by scores of spectators, they’ll bike down South Roosevelt Boulevard beside the Atlantic Ocean, past Higgs Beach, into Key West’s picturesque Old Town and along popular Duval Street.

The unearthly antics are to culminate in the ZombieFest After Party at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, 21 E. Quay Road. Admission is free and scheduled attractions include food vendors, a full bar, and three huge bands — Electric Kif, Sueñalo and Afrobeta — rocking the Zombie Stage.

The Zombie Bike Ride takes place on the first weekend of Key West's annual Fantasy Fest costuming and masking festival, a 10-day extravaganza scheduled Friday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 27.

The 6-9 p.m. Art Walk is held the third Thursday of each month, featuring artists and galleries on Morada Way between mile markers 81 and 82.

The Morada Way galleries host a selection of artists in various mediums including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, design and even gyotaku or fish printing.

Jessica Ann Art displays owner-artist Jessica Ann Hessing’s tropical and marine life art with photography, wearable art, jewelry, gift items and unique works by other artists. She has also launched her own sustainably produced line of candles with Keys-inspired scents.

The traditional Japanese art of fish printing is on display at Gyotaku by Lisa Lee, who creates original prints of people’s catches as well as reproductions offered as art prints and on products including gift cards and glassware.

Fans can find collections of Florida’s offshore and inshore saltwater fishing art at Islamorada Art Gallery by Pasta. Artist Roberto “Pasta” Pantaleo’s paintings also depict turtles and other marine life, mangroves, birds and abstract imagery.

Pantaleo plays drums in the Lower Mat Cats band, which performs on the Blue Marlin stage during many Art Walks. Various other Keys-based musicians grace the stage in the courtyard at Limelight Studio and Gallery. 

Limelight houses the work of multimedia artist Jul Jankowski. From painting and drawing to sculpture, her work functions as a celebrative ode to light. She was recently commissioned to create the new version of the landmark roadside mermaid at Islamorada’s Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar.

Florida Keys Brewing Company is a popular spot during the monthly Art Walks, offering a wide selection of custom brews that can be enjoyed inside or in the outdoor beer garden. The brewery also is a “must-shop” stop with its own line of brightly colored custom hats, koozies, leggings, T-shirts, tank tops and other items.

Tucked away on the back side of the beer garden is the studio and gallery of painter and Key Largo native Tayler Hale. There, he may be seen working on his pieces capturing the dynamic interplay between water and light that is so distinctive to the Florida Keys.

The gallery and ceramics studio of Morada Way Clay features local potters. During Art Walk, patrons can learn about the studio’s pottery painting and clay classes. 

The new Salt & Silver Studio offers 1800s chemical process heirloom portrait photography. Also new in the district is Purple Pineapple Boutique with clothing for women, children and infants as well as unique gifts.

In addition to the galleries and studios, attendees can browse booths featuring a wide range of crafts, artwork, clothing, jewelry and information from Keys conservation groups and other nonprofit organizations.

During their stroll along the Old Highway, Art Walk participants also can enjoy wine tastes and “culinary art” from local eateries including Kaiyo Grill & Sushi, Chef Michael’s, Green Turtle Inn, Islamorada Wine Co. and a variety of food and beverage trucks.

Fantasy Fest 2024 features a blend of longtime favorite events and new offerings designed to delight fans of frivolity. Creative costuming is paramount, and the 10-day schedule features multiple competitions with prizes for the most imaginative ensembles.

Organizers encourage people to design their costumes and parade floats around the theme. Elements might recall ’90s favorites like the spellbinding “Harry Potter” book series and blockbuster “Titanic” film, or the decade’s neon-bright color palette and hip-hop stylings.

The festival’s official kickoff is the two-day Bahama Village Goombay Festival. Held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19, the Caribbean-flavored Goombay is a family-friendly street party in Key West’s historic Bahama Village neighborhood with nonstop musical entertainment, island-style food and arts and crafts.

Also Oct. 18, the Fantasy Fest King and Queen are to be crowned at the Fun and Furryous Royal Coronation soiree and on-stage extravaganza, capping a multiweek fundraising effort by candidates to benefit the Florida Keys SPCA.

Among the dozens of events orchestrated for fantasy fans is the wacky Pet Masquerade, a festival favorite for costumed pets and their people that takes place Wednesday, Oct. 23.

The following day brings the Key West Business Guild’s 41st annual Headdress Ball, hosted by renowned female impersonator Randy Roberts, where “headliners” compete for prizes in huge and elaborate masks.

Plans call for the cosmic carnival to hit the streets Friday, Oct. 25, with a freewheeling Masquerade March of costumed characters. Marchers are encouraged to bring noisemakers and percussion instruments, and display their best ’90s neon finery to “light up” the cavalcade through part of Key West’s Old Town.

Revelers can also indulge their festive spirit at events including the family-friendly Zombie Bike Ride, two-night Costume Promenade in the festival’s designated Fantasy Zone, “Tutu Tuesday” celebrations, Fantasy Market in the Key West Historic Seaport, disco dance party, musical tributes to iconic entertainers and a “Living Art” competition for painted bodies.

Saturday night, Oct. 26, nearly 70,000 spectators are expected to line Whitehead and Duval streets for the spectacular Key West Fantasy Fest Parade. A dazzling procession of large-scale floats and costumed marching groups, the parade displays the off-beat creativity and exuberant spirit that characterize both the festival and the island of Key West.

The annual Key West BrewFest is scheduled Thursday through Monday, Aug. 29 through Sept. 2. Activities “on tap” include beer-focused dinners, pool parties, live music, the beachfront Key West BrewFest Signature Tasting Event and other enticements for thirsty attendees.

The event, presented by the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club of the Conch Republic and hosted by the Southernmost Beach Resort, benefits local Rotary scholarships and charitable initiatives.

Featured beers range from intriguingly named offerings such as Fat Tire Ale and Cat 5 Key Lime Lager to local favorites from Florida Keys Brewing Co., Waterfront Brewery, Cayo Hueso Brewing and Islamorada Beer Co. among others.

The 2024 BrewFest features new offerings including the Brews & Bites Bash at First Flight Island Restaurant and Brewery, 301 Whitehead St.; and the Jimmy Buffett Tribute Concert and Cheeseburger Beach Battle at the Southernmost Beach Resort, 1319 Duval St., featuring the national touring tribute band Buffett’s Margaritaville. Both events are set for  Friday, Aug. 30, with ticket prices of $65 per person and $20/$30 per person, respectively.

The undisputed festival highlight is the BrewFest Signature Tasting Event. Featuring more than 150 beers from leading, boutique and small-batch breweries, the tasting extravaganza is set for 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, on the beach at the Southernmost Beach Resort.  

While enjoying the evening beside the Atlantic Ocean, attendees can stroll from booth to booth, savoring live music and unlimited samples of beers, lagers and ales. 

General admission is $50 per person. Also available are VIP tickets for $100 per person that include early admission to a 3-5 p.m. VIP tasting with passed appetizers from the Southernmost Beach Café.

Fans of brews and on-the-water adventures can participate in a sandbar trip with Beach Weekend Key West from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1. The trip is limited to 28 people and includes complimentary beer. Tickets are $30 per person, available by calling Beach Weekend at 305-296-0364.

“Just a Few Friends Key West” is to commemorate the island city’s favorite son with events including a “second line” memorial walking parade, concerts by Buffett’s musical friends and tribute bands, beach parties, walking and biking tours of the entertainer’s favorite spots, sailing excursions and other activities that recall the Key West lifestyle he chronicled in his music.

Buffett, who passed away Sept. 1, 2023, discovered the island in the early 1970s and its influence is widely credited with inspiring many of his most enduring songs, including the classic hit “Margaritaville.” He called Key West home during some of his most productive years and frequently referenced its characters, landmarks and freewheeling vibe in his lyrics.

“Just a Few Friends” is to begin Friday, Aug. 30, with highlights including the 11 a.m. reading of a Florida State Legislature proclamation designating Jimmy Buffett Day. Civic leaders, regional celebrities and Buffett fans are to gather for the waterfront reading and welcome ceremony outside his Shrimp Boat Sound recording studio in the Key West Historic Seaport.

Friday’s schedule also features a welcome party on the beach with live music by a tribute band.

The schedule Saturday, Aug. 31, recalls some of the entertainer’s classic songs with activities including a margarita bar crawl and “Blue Heaven Rendezvous” trop-rock jam.   

Events Sunday, Sept. 1, are highlighted by the Second Line Memorial Walking Parade, a procession for fans of Buffett’s music and the island lifestyle it promotes. Beginning at 5 p.m. in the 100 block of Key West’s famed Duval Street, the march is to be characterized by strolling musicians, participants wearing tropical attire and an easy camaraderie reminiscent of Buffett’s concerts. 

While taking part in the procession is free, souvenir parade passes can be purchased to benefit local nonprofit organizations.

Marchers are to proceed up Duval Street past the singer/songwriter’s original Margaritaville Store and Margaritaville Café, turn right onto Southard Street and end at Truman Waterfront Park for the exuberant Party in the Park celebration.

Set for 6-11 p.m. Sunday, the free-admission gathering features nonstop live music by talents including Will Kimbrough, co-writer of Buffett’s posthumous hit “Bubbles Up.” Attendees also can sample offerings from local food trucks and vendors, browse wares crafted by local artisans, share Buffett tales and enjoy a Key West sunset from the park.

The festival concludes on Labor Day — Monday, Sept. 2 — with a packed schedule that includes a “pencil thin mustache” contest inspired by Buffett’s song of the same name. The two final events also reference his song titles: a 5-8 p.m. “Come Monday” seafood boil and a “Nautical Wheelers” sunset tribute concert starring Roger Bartlett, the original guitarist for Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.

“And Hemingway was a very adventurous man, and I admire him for that,” he said.

The Look-Alike Contest finals followed preliminary rounds Thursday and Friday. Many entrants wore casual sportsman’s garb or thick fisherman’s sweaters, attempting to emulate the rugged "Papa" persona that Hemingway adopted in his later years.

Saturday night, competitors including Leslaw Jedrysko of Nowy Targ, Poland, paraded across Sloppy Joe’s stage and took turns speaking as hordes of spectators waved signs and applauded their favorites.

Masterson wowed the judges — all previous contest winners — by singing a themed parody of the Garth Brooks hit “Friends in Low Places.”

The new “Papa” said he writes a little bit and shares several other traits with Hemingway.

“I grew up hunting and fishing,” Masterson said. “My father was a lot like Hemingway's father. He taught me all about the outdoors and about fishing and hunting, and taking care and being a good steward of our environment.”

In the rowdy crowd at Sloppy Joe’s was celebrity chef Paula Deen, whose husband Michael Groover won a look-alike title in 2018.

Hemingway Days salutes the vigorous Key West lifestyle and literary talent of the author who wrote classics including "For Whom the Bell Tolls” and "To Have and Have Not" during his years on the island.

Festival events included a quirky "Running of the Bulls" spoof, readings and presentations, and the Key West Marlin Tournament that recalls Hemingway's passion for Florida Keys fishing.

BIG PINE KEY, Florida Keys -- A sub-sea “concert,” staged to promote environmentally responsible diving and reef protection was staged for the 40th time this weekend.
 
The 40th annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival took place Saturday at Looe (pronounced "Lou") Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary about 6 miles south of Big Pine Key. The sanctuary protects the waters surrounding the entire Florida Keys island chain. 

Organized by the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce and Keys radio station US1 104.1 FM, the concert provided a “submerged soundtrack” for divers -- including some costumed as mermaids -- who swam among Looe Key’s colorful tropical fish, coral formations and other marine life. 

“This is a fantastic combination of incredible music -- there are songs with lots of high notes to them and they sound so wonderful underwater -- with the beauty of the coral reef and mermaids, and it’s a very eye-catching experience,” said Steve Miller, executive director of the chamber of commerce. “It’s something that you’ll never forget seeing.” 

Music broadcast by the radio station was piped underwater through speakers suspended beneath boats above the reef. Participants swayed to a sea-focused playlist that included Jimmy Buffett’s “Bubbles Up,” the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” and the themes from TV’s classic “Gilligan’s Island” and “The Little Mermaid” film.

The music was interspersed with diver awareness messages about ways to enjoy the underwater world while minimizing environmental impacts on the reef, whose rich biodiversity has inspired comparisons to an underwater rainforest. 

“The conservation of the reef is one of the main things that we want to draw attention to through this, so we’re hoping that people will focus in on one of the only living coral reefs in the Northern Hemisphere,” said Miller.

On its opening and closing days, the festival spotlights a unique exhibit at the Key West Museum of Art & History, 281 Front St., that commemorates the author’s writing talent and Key West life.

Literary and history aficionados can view rare Hemingway artifacts and memorabilia, including his World War I ambulance driver’s uniform, as well as 59 original drawings by famed marine wildlife artist Guy Harvey that provide a visual narrative to Hemingway’s novel, “The Old Man and the Sea.”

On the designated days, Tuesday and Sunday, July 16 and 21, entry to the museum is free to those who mention Hemingway Days at the admission desk.

Though best known for his novels and short stories, Hemingway also wrote poetry. Festival events include the acclaimed Key West Poetry Guild’s annual showcase of the author’s little-known poetry, paired with guild members’ original poems and stories honoring him.

A tradition since 2012, the “Papa’s Poems” reading is to take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, in the Carper Theater at Key West’s Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St.

The 1930s in Key West — the Depression era that Hemingway experienced and chronicled in his novel, “To Have and Have Not,” set primarily in the island city — is the subject of a happy-hour presentation by Cori Convertito, Ph.D., curator and historian for the Key West Art & Historical Society.

The presentation is slated for 5 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Comedy Key West, 218 Whitehead St. Tickets are required and can be purchased through a link at kwahs.org/upcoming-events.

Continuing the Hemingway literary heritage, the festival is associated with the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. Established in 1981 to recognize the work of emerging writers of short fiction, it has been directed since then by Lorian Hemingway, Ernest’s granddaughter and author of books including “Walk on Water.”

The look-alike challenge is a highlight of the island city’s July 16-21 Hemingway Days celebration, created to salute the writing talent and adventurous life of the world-renowned author who lived and wrote in Key West during the 1930s. The bearded brethren plan to gather Sunday at Sloppy Joe’s for the Papa Birthday Bash commemorating the 125th anniversary of Hemingway’s July 21 birth. The fun begins at 9 a.m. with opportunities to take photos with the brand-new “Papa 2024,” and includes a themed birthday cake at noon. 

Also scheduled is a Wednesday evening welcome party for contestants and their fans, as well as the Hemingway Look-Alike Society’s Thursday evening scholarship presentations to Florida Keys students. Established in 2000, the scholarship program is supported by fundraising efforts by the “Papas” and their followers.

Its primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and the juice of the tiny yellow Key lime, with the creamy filling typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue.

The Key Lime Festival’s official kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, featuring author and festival co-founder David Sloan, who penned “The Key West Key Lime Pie Cookbook.” The event is scheduled at the Curry Mansion, 511 Caroline St., a lavish property whose kitchen is renowned as the pie’s birthplace.

The festival’s best known attraction is the World Famous Key Lime Pie Eating Championship set for Thursday, July 4, outside the Southernmost Beach Café, 1405 Duval St. Entrants must attempt to devour an entire 9-inch pie, topped with mountains of whipped cream, in the fastest time — without using their hands.

The free-to-watch beachfront competition is paired with family-friendly games and a Key Lime Vendor Village featuring lime-inspired wares ranging from local art and jewelry to beauty products. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the contest takes place at 1:30 p.m.

Friday’s highlights are to include the Key Lime Sip & Stroll cocktail sampling for libation lovers, a Key Lime Bike Tour, a lively tasting of locally distilled Key lime rum — and even a fundraising bash where local notables just might get a pie in the face.

The quirky Key Lime Pie Drop is to headline Saturday’s events. Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the gravity-defying competition challenges entrants to craft contraptions to hold and protect miniature pies — and then drop their creations from atop the Key West Lighthouse, 938 Whitehead St., without damaging the pie. While few pies land unscathed each year, the free-admission contest typically draws hundreds of spectators to watch the fun.

Other scheduled festival attractions include a Key lime tree cultivation master class, 5k run, daily lime-infused culinary experiences, a pool party, a historical presentation on Key limes and the pie they inspired, a wacky “Hot Wheels” race and the annual Key Lime Pie Hop. The festival’s subsequent offerings include daily self-guided tours of Stock Island’s favorite food trucks and the island’s richly creative street art murals.

Several Father’s Day activities for dads and kids are available Sunday. The 40th annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival takes place at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary approximately 6 miles south of Big Pine Key. The sanctuary protects the waters surrounding the entire Florida Keys island chain, including the continental United States’ only coral barrier reef. 

The Underwater Music Festival is to be staged from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday by the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce and Keys radio station US1 104.1 FM. While swimming among Looe Key’s vivid marine life, participants can listen to music broadcast by the station and piped underwater via speakers suspended beneath boats above the reef.

The playlist typically features marine melodies ranging from Jimmy Buffett’s “A Pirate Looks at 40” and “Fins” to the Beatles’ “Octopus’s Garden” and the theme from “The Little Mermaid” film.

Those planning to submerge themselves in the festival can learn about reef restoration Friday, July 12, during a free 6-8 p.m. welcome gathering at Mote Marine Laboratory’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration, 24244 Overseas Highway on Summerland Key. Representatives will be on hand to lead tours of the facility and showcase Mote’s groundbreaking coral cultivation and restoration efforts.

During Saturday’s aquatic experience, the music is to be interspersed with diver awareness messages about ways to minimize environmental impacts on the world’s reefs, whose rich biodiversity has led them to be called the rainforests of the sea.

As well as colorful reef fish and other marine life, divers and snorkelers might even spot “mermaids” and other costumed characters beneath the waves — some adding to the concert component by “playing” musical instruments during an underwater jam session.

Ocean enthusiasts interested in participating in the unique experience can reserve space on boats run by Lower Keys dive operators or launch their own boats from public ramps and marinas in the area.

Presented by the Key West Business Guild and featuring a retro disco theme, Pride salutes the all-inclusive “One Human Family” mindset of the subtropical island internationally known as a top LGBTQ vacation spot.

Attractions include late-night dance parties, daytime and sunset sailing excursions, films and drag performances, a disco bar crawl for costumed participants and Pride’s traditional street fair — but with a colorful new twist.

Key West Pride 2024 begins Wednesday, June 5, with a luncheon recalling the ’70s disco days and contributions that decade’s residents made to gay Key West. A kick-off party, designed to transport attendees back in time to revisit disco-era delights, is set for 5:30 pm. at the Hard Rock Café, 313 Duval St.

Highlights Thursday, June 6, include a “Tea on the Sea” sunset sail and floating tea dance staged by Fury Water Adventures. Showcasing prime talents from the island’s performing arts community, “Follies” is reminiscent of an old-fashioned variety show or television’s vintage “Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town.” The performance is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Key West Theater at 512 Eaton St., a historic spot with origins dating back to 1848.

The production is presented by the Key West Business Guild, currently in its 46th year of promoting LGBTQ travel to Key West, and benefits that organization. The not-for-profit guild also produces annual festivals including its signature Key West Pride, scheduled June 5-9. 

"Pride Follies" is directed and hosted by Destiny Montgomery, who was the 2017 queen of Key West’s outrageous Fantasy Fest celebration. Organizers report that acts are to range from comedy to vocals to dancing.

Doors are to open at 6 p.m. ahead of the 7 p.m. curtain. The Key West Theater offers full bar service and seating both downstairs and on an upper mezzanine.

The unique revue presents a playful, entertaining view of traditional ballet through parodies of iconic productions like “Swan Lake.” Modern dance and original works also are featured.

During Les Ballets Trockadero’s performances, professional male dancers take all the roles, delicately balancing “en pointe” and executing flawless ballet moves. The dancers’ extraordinary skills and athleticism provide an intriguing contrast to the comedic elements.  

Since the troupe’s founding in 1974, “the Trocks” have become an artistic and popular success as well as a worldwide dance phenomenon. The troupe has participated in international dance festivals, appeared on numerous network television shows and toured to perform in some 43 countries.

An annual tradition for many of America’s country and pop music luminaries, the songfest is spearheaded by international performing rights organization BMI and Rams Head Presents. Fans of live music can rock to performances at a popular boutique theater, bars and restaurants, waterfront resorts, restored historic sites, a catamaran at sunset, and the Coffee Butler Amphitheater in Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park.

Most shows feature a rotating group of writer/artists who play their hits, introduce new melodies, share creative insights and relate the stories behind their songs. Both free-admission and ticketed offerings make up the five-day schedule.

As well as Swindell, the festival’s talent roster includes blues/gospel and “sacred steel” virtuoso Robert Randolph, Texas singer/songwriter and master storyteller Robert Earl Keen, multiple Grammy winner Lori McKenna, and celebrated songwriters and festival veterans Liz Rose, James Slater, Bob DiPiero, Jack Ingram, Chuck Cannon and Jeffrey Steele.

Winner of three 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards and famed for “Drinkaby” and “Sad Ass Country Song” among many other hits, Swindell is to showcase the distinctive style that has made him a fan favorite. The lineup also features Restless Road and Mackenzie Carpenter.

Dallas Davidson is to headline the free outdoor “main stage” concert beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 4, in the 200 block of Key West’s Duval Street. The superstar songwriter has penned well over two dozen number-one hits and had his creations recorded by musical notables ranging from Tim McGraw to Luke Bryan.

The Duval Street performance also features trailblazing country artist Lily Rose, best known for the viral smash “Villain.”

“We’re excited to offer different experiences, from small intimate performances in a historic church to a high-energy concert at a picturesque island amphitheater — all aimed at creating unforgettable moments for festivalgoers,” said Kyle Muehlhauser, co-owner of the Key West Songwriters Festival and Rams Head Presents.

With pieces installed among the property’s boardwalks, trails and hidden glades, the exhibit is to provide garden visitors an organic illustration of harmony with nature. 

Now in its 88th year, the unique open-air “living museum” is acclaimed as the only frost-free tropical forest, natural conservation habitat and native plant botanical garden in the continental United States.

Florida Keys artists’ sculptures and other works were selected for their ability to intrigue visitors to the one-of-a-kind garden, enhance the surrounding environment and withstand outdoor weather conditions.

Located at 5210 College Road, the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden shelters plant life native to South Florida, Cuba and the Caribbean including many threatened and endangered species. Rich in biodiversity, it features two wetland habitats, national and state champion trees, two butterfly gardens and native butterflies, resident and migratory birds, seasonal flowers and other attractions for nature enthusiasts.

Presented by the not-for-profit Islamorada Community Entertainment, the outdoor concert takes place at the ICE Amphitheater at Founders Park, mile marker 87 bayside on Plantation Key. Doors open at 10 a.m. and live performances are scheduled from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Bay Jam 29’s lineup features Caribbean-influenced jazz by the Bill Todd Trio; the genre-bending cover bands Uncle Rico, the Lower Mat Cats and the Key Largo Jam Band; reggae-tinged blues by Jimmy Hawkins; more blues by Felex the Catt and the Lady A Blues Band; Leah Sutter’s acoustic pop; popular Keys performers the Barstool Sailors and The Carousers; and the flamenco-infused guitar fusion of Dave Feder, Bay Jam’s founder and longtime guiding spirit.

Bay Jam attractions also are to include artisan booths, festival souvenir merchandise, cold locally crafted beers and food truck selections.

Attendees can bring lawn chairs and blankets, or enjoy a swim at the bayside beach. Well-behaved leashed pets are welcome, but coolers are not permitted.

General admission is free, although donations are welcomed. Parking is available inside Founders Park for $10.

Event proceeds help fund in-school programs and arts and music scholarships for Upper Keys high school students. ICE events have contributed nearly $1 million toward the grants.

The Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorates the Florida Keys’ symbolic secession from the United States — an act inspired by the 1982 establishment of a U.S. Border Patrol blockade at the top of the island chain that virtually stopped traffic on the only road connecting the Keys to mainland Florida.

In protest, local officials staged the secession and rechristened the Keys as the independent Conch Republic. They then declared “war” on the mother country, carried it out by pelting a U.S. Naval officer with stale Cuban bread, immediately surrendered and requested $1 billion in foreign aid.

Today the republic, whose motto is “We Seceded Where Others Failed,” is recognized around the world as the Keys’ irreverent alter ego. Both the Conch Republic and the festival it inspired honor the island chain’s freewheeling character and self-reliant characters.

Activities begin Friday, April 19, with an opening ceremony and the raising of the colors at Key West’s landmark Mallory Square. A gala kick-off party is to follow at the Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 William St. in the Key West Historic Seaport.

The weekend’s highlights include the outrageous 40th annual Conch Republic Drag Race. Slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in the 700 block of Duval Street, the race is to feature fetchingly garbed female impersonators sprinting down the pavement in startlingly high heels.

The secession itself is to be commemorated at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Truman Waterfront Pier next to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ingham museum ship. Hosted by Conch Republic dignitaries and military members, the ceremony is to include live music and a cash bar. 

Subsequent events include the so-called “World’s Loooooongest Parade” along Duval Street from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, a pirate ball and costume contest, the wacky “Blue Ribbon Bed Races” with decorated beds, and a re-enactment of the Great Sea Battle of the Conch Republic. During the latter, sea dogs and wenches on tall ships and other vessels combat “evil federal forces” and the republic always wins.

The Conch Republic calendar also features a Hot Havana Nights dance party under the stars, sailing excursions and other adventures in the blue waters surrounding Key West, participatory beach and island cleanups, a naval parade in Key West Harbor and other fun-filled gatherings.

The festival concludes Sunday, April 28, after a lively artisan market, an open-air jazz performance and a sailing race that recalls the Florida Keys’ seafaring heritage.

KEY WEST, Fla. -- Making music with a conch (pronounced "konk") shell might seem unusual, but several dozen people tried it during weekend’s annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest in the Florida Keys. 

Saturday’s Key West’s "Conch Honk" ended with a tie in the men’s division after Peter Drake and Brian Cardis both demonstrated their “pucker power” by playing song excerpts on the conch’s fluted, pink-lined shell.
 

Cardis, a pediatric cardiologist from Macon, Georgia, played part of Elton John’s hit “Crocodile Rock,” alternating between large and miniature shells while wearing glittery glasses like those favored by John.

“I tried to pick a song that was fun and a crowd pleaser, and one that would fall in line with the limited amount of notes that you can play on a conch shell,” said Cardis, who also won the men’s division in 2023.

Drake, a mental health counselor from North Stonington, Connecticut, chose the traditional tune “Amazing Grace” — a tune he said he often played at sunset on his sailboat.

He first entered the contest as a teen about 50 years ago, and offered some tips for aspiring “conch honkers.”

“I would give the advice of start slowly, learn that bass note that the conch shell has within it, and just play it nice and clear — as clear as they can,” Drake said. 

Contest judges evaluated competing men, women, children and groups on the quality, duration, loudness and novelty of sounds they made.

Other winners included Florida Keys duo Joseph Cosme and Eddie Strunk, who took top honors in the group division after performing a lively improvisational duet. Angelica Hodek of Key West blew a long, strong blast to earn the women’s division title.

Presented by Key West’s Old Island Restoration Foundation, the quirky contest salutes the Florida Keys’ seafaring heritage and centuries-old use of the “conch horn” for signaling and communication.

As well as an offbeat musical instrument, the conch shell is an enduring symbol of the Keys. Native-born citizens call themselves "conchs,” and the island chain is nicknamed the Conch Republic.

The outdoor “feast fest,” a top draw for seafood lovers and Florida Keys families, is now in its 48th year. The festival is one of the Keys’ largest and takes place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 9, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Marathon Community Park, mile marker 49 oceanside.

Preceding the flyover, a military tribute is planned with the presentation of colors at 12:45 p.m. followed by the singing of the national anthem. 

Representing the might of the U.S. military and the Navy’s more than 200-year presence in the Florida Keys, the flyover is likely to capture the crowds’ full attention as the supersonic, aerodynamic fighter jets thunder overhead.

Equally attention-getting is the menu of local shrimp, lobster, stone crab and other favorites. Marathon-area commercial fisheries and markets catch, clean and cook the nearly 15,000-pound spread of fresh Keys seafood and tasty smoked fish dip prepared according to safeguarded “only-in-the-Keys” recipes and served at the festival.

Fishermen-turned-chefs, their families and hundreds of volunteers serve up the tasty favorites with sides of baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies or french fries. Attendees also can chow down on other succulent items such as fish tacos, oysters, crab cakes, Cuban croquetas and more.

Although it’s not harvested in the Keys, conch is dished up as ceviche, chowder and golden-fried fritters. Hot dogs and hamburgers are to be available too, as are sweet treats — homemade Key lime pies and other baked goods — along with adult beverages including cold beer, frozen margaritas and daiquiris.

Over 200 merchant booths are to span the park displaying locally crafted spices, honey, salt scrubs and soaps; jewelry and artwork; nautical items; tropical apparel and accessories; plants, home and outdoor décor; and information about Keys nonprofit, marine animal and rescue organizations. Other attractions include a boat show, children's games and raffle prizes.

Daily live music performances are to include reggae, trop rock, blues, country and high-energy rock and roll. An appearance by The Red Elvises, with a “Siberian Surf Rock” vibe, is guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing.
