Key West, Fla. – Perseverance, a lucky sweater, and an uncanny resemblance to one of world’s most iconic authors. That was the winning formula that helped a 69-year-old man from Key West, Florida, win the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest title this weekend in the Southernmost City in the U.S. 

A Key West local, Tim Stockwell, captured the coveted title, beating out more than a hundred contestants to make the top 5. And it was in that final round that he offered a compelling story as to why he deserved to be “Papa 2025.”  

His lucky charm? A thick wool sweater, like the one Hemingway wore, which he bravely donned in the sweltering July heat.  

“This sweater has been worn by seven other previous winners and I’m very grateful and glad to be able to call it the eighth,” said Stockwell, who moved to the island from Michigan in 2019 and has participated in the event ever since.  

This year’s contest took place over three nights, starting with 131 contestants, then 24 semi-finalists, and finally the top 5. The location? Sloppy Joe’s Bar — a frequent hangout for Hemingway when he lived and wrote in Key West during the 1930s. 

The contest featured three younger look-alikes, including six-year-old Keefer Haynie from Baton Rouge. The whimsical tribute is all part of the annual Hemingway Days Festival that honors the enduring legacy and literary mastery of the author who wrote "For Whom the Bell Tolls,” "To Have and Have Not" and other classics during his Key West years. 

During his plea to judges, Stockwell recounted his favorite story about the iconic author that showcased the author’s softer side. He shared that Hemingway formed a baseball team of Cuban youngsters called “Gigi’s Stars” and provided a group of boys — including his own sons — with a field on his property. He also gave them new uniforms, bats, balls, and gloves, pitched for both teams, and never kept score. 

“The way he taught those young men to become young men, how to play fair, how to be honest, how to be straightforward…he taught those kids how to live a life well-lived, and they benefited from his generosity and his kindness,” he recalled. 

Stockwell is the latest ambassador for the bearded brotherhood known as “The Hemingway Look-Alike Society,” an organization that combines camaraderie and scholarships to support Florida Keys college students.  

“He broke all the barriers for those kids,” said Stockwell. “They had a great opportunity. I’d like to continue that. And that’s why I’m proud to call these guys my brothers.”

Being a judge in the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest has one important requirement — you must be a past winner. This panel of judges patiently listened to more than 130 men state their case as to why they should win and crowned a champion on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Key West, Florida. Entrants in the quirky competition were required to launch miniature Key lime pies —encased in protective contraptions they made in advance — from atop the Key West Lighthouse. 

Their goal? To land an undamaged pie on a ground-level target beside the light, now open for tours as the historic Key West Lighthouse & Keeper’s Quarters. 

More than two dozen individual and team contestants climbed the 88 steps to the top of the lighthouse tower to compete. Their pies were enclosed in creations that featured pool noodles, smiley-face balloons, stuffed animals, makeshift parachutes, bubble wrap and — for one memorable entry — a 35-inch plush goose dressed in a cape and shades. 

Most proved to be aerially unsound, resulting in mishaps that ranged from off-course landings to crashed contraptions and complete pie annihilation. 

Though few pies survived the gravity-defying drop, an entry dubbed “A Pie in Plain Sight” crafted from a plastic tub, tissue paper, plastic bags and ribbon sailed sweetly toward the target and landed with its pie mostly intact — earning the contest’s first prize. 

Staged July 2-6, the Key Lime Festival salutes the tiny yellow limes and the pie made from them. Believed to have been born in Key West, the tart yet creamy confection was designated Florida's official pie in 2006 by the state legislature.

Other events included the World Famous Key Lime Pie Eating Championship, themed dinners, parties and markets, and tasting strolls for fans of Key lime cocktails and pie.

The 2025 festival was presented in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and We’ve Got the Keys.

Key West, Fla. – Move over Coney Island, there’s a new champ being crowned and it’s got nothing to do with hot dogs. In fact, this victory is way sweeter, a little bit tart, and a whole lotta FUN! 

In Key West, Florida, this July Fourth, the lure of the LIME...as in KEY LIME...was on full display. Hundreds of spectators packed the Southernmost City in the Continental United States to see who would claim the coveted Key Lime Pie Eating Champ title. And as you can imagine, the contestants delivered a show stopping performance, throwing any and ALL caution to the wind! 

With hands behind backs and some wearing safety goggles, 25 hopefuls competed for the top prize; devouring the island city’s signature dessert — the key lime pie.  

“There's no place I'd rather be on the 4th of July than in Key West eating a nine-inch key lime pie. It beats a New York hotdog every single time,” said festival co-director Liz Love. 

Now in its 13th year, this tart and tasty tradition has been the centerpiece of Key West's annual Key Lime Festival, which runs five days and features everything from sip and strolls to the famous key lime pie drop from the top of the Key West Lighthouse. 

The Key Lime Pie Eating Contest that attracts contestants from far and wide, including Chicago, Kentucky, Texas and Lake of the Ozarks. But it was a Florida man, with a unique technique, who emerged as the top dog! 

“My strategy today was listening to my wife who told me to use my chin. open my mouth and just swallow . . . and less chewing,” said Tom Luciano (Pronounced LUCY-ON-OH), from Venice, Florida.  

That advice paid off. He won the contest in just two minutes 46 seconds. But he’s not the fastest. That title is still being held by Trey Bergman. In 2018, the attorney from Houston, Texas devoured his dessert in just 40:57 seconds.  

So, what’s is the winner going to eat tonight? 

“I am going to have dessert tonight. I feel like I haven't had enough key lime pie yet,” Luciano said.

Florida Keys Concert Association presents extraordinary performances in both Marathon and Islamorada through February. Impromptu Classical Concerts of Key West has brought a variety of stellar ensembles playing classical music in all styles to the southernmost island city for over 50 years. The acclaimed organization’s 2025 concerts continue that tradition Feb. 9 with the Dover Quartet, named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years; this season’s rising star, pianist Avery Gagliano, performing Feb. 23; the pioneering oboe, bassoon and piano ensemble Poulenc Trio on March 9; and Duo Beaux Arts, Catherine Lan and Tao Lin, March 23. Performances take place at 4 p.m. at the historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 401 Duval St.

Rams Head Presents Key West brings several big-name acts to two separate venues as part of the Key West Concert Series:

• The Key West Theater at 512 Eaton St. features a packed season of performances in an intimate setting. Upcoming performances include the “greatest front porch blues band in the world,” The Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band, playing Feb. 5; The Steel Wheels set for Feb. 13; Western swing virtuosos Asleep at the Wheel Feb. 28; Awaken: The Music of YES April 6; and Delta blues virtuoso Tab Benoit with Sierra Green and the Giants April 11.
• At the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, 21 E. Quay Road, music lovers can enjoy top names performing live in an open-air waterfront setting. Also at Tennessee William Theatre, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, launched 27 years ago in Key West under the direction of Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, presents dynamic performances for music enthusiasts in the island city. The orchestra’s Valentine’s Day concert Feb. 14 is to focus on compositions that celebrate love, headlined by the swashbuckling “Don Juan,” a musical tale of the fictional Spanish rogue by Richard Strauss. An homage to composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is scheduled March 15, as the symphony performs the hauntingly beautiful “Requiem” with vocal performances by four remarkable soloists and the South Florida Symphony Chorus.

For an outdoor concert experience, the Florida Keys Community Concert Band hosts the free “Pops in the Park” series. Upcoming performances, each on Saturday afternoons at 4 p.m., include “Kokomo Key” Feb. 22, showcasing Florida songs and tropical music with special guests Mangrove Swamp Band; “Twilight Tunes” March 29 featuring movie and show tunes with special guests Ukulele Joy; and “Conch Classics” April 19 presenting international music from throughout time. Islamorada Community Entertainment brings quality entertainment and cultural events to the Upper Keys including performances in the Beats on the Bay music series at the amphitheater in Islamorada’s Founders Park, mile marker 87 bayside. Dark Side of the Sol recreates the sounds of Pink Floyd Feb. 14, and The Freebirds pay tribute to the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd March 7. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free but there is a $10 fee for parking. The Beats on the Bay series finale, Bay Jam, takes over the amphitheater from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 13. The annual Afro Roots Fest returns to the Keys Friday through Sunday, April 4-6, with a weekend of free musical entertainment highlighting Afro-Caribbean vibes in the beer garden at the Florida Keys Brewing Company, 81611 Old Highway in Islamorada. Performances are to feature Cortadito playing traditional Cuban folk music of the early 20th century, roots and reggae beats with Philip Montalban, Latin funk and fusion by Electric Piquete and more.

The Key West Songwriters Festival, set for April 30 through May 4, is to showcase America’s foremost performing songwriters on multiple stages and venues in the island city. The highly acclaimed event typically includes more than 50 shows and over 200 country and pop music hitmakers. Events are scheduled throughout the month to celebrate the 114th anniversary of Williams’ birth on March 26, 1911. Acclaimed for plays including “The Glass Menagerie” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” he first visited Key West in 1941 and subsequently purchased a home where he resided for the rest of his life.

The festival is spearheaded by the Key West Art & Historical Society, operator of the Tennessee Williams Museum. Highlights include a fundraising garden party Sunday, March 2, at the Key West home of Dennis Beaver and Bert Whitt, founders of the exhibit that became the museum. Proceeds are to support the facility.

Beaver also is to lead two curator tours of the museum, located at 513 Truman Ave. and showcasing Williams’ personal photographs, rare memorabilia, video footage and other items that chronicle his years on the island. Set for March 7 and 14, tours focus on the playwright’s classic works “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Rose Tattoo,” respectively.

Key West’s Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St., is to commemorate the playwright with film screenings on four consecutive Mondays in March. Films begin at 6:30 p.m. and include “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “The Eccentricities of a Nightingale,” “The Rose Tattoo” and “Sweet Bird of Youth.” In addition, a free outdoor screening of “A Streetcar Named Desire” is scheduled Thursday, March 6. 

Festival attendees also can explore Key West sites associated with Williams on “A Trolley Tour Named Desire” led by Beaver, and celebrate the playwright’s era with “The Tennessee Williams Songbook,” featuring local performers Bobby Nesbitt and Carmen Rodriguez.

Other events include a plein air painting challenge that recalls Williams’ passion for painting; contests for writers of prose and poetry; a lecture by historian Cori Convertito, Ph.D., on the playwright’s life in Key West; a themed four-course dinner; two staged theatrical readings; and a March 26 “birthday party” at the Tennessee Williams Museum.

Since 1978, The Key Players group has brought live community theater to the Upper Keys. The next production, “Almost, Maine,” is scheduled to run Feb. 27 through March 9. The Studios of Key West supports artists, inspires creativity and builds community. Blowing into the fluted, pink-lined shell of the hardy sea mollusk called conch (pronounced “konk”) is a centuries-old Florida Keys tradition. Conch horns were employed as signaling devices by early Native Americans, shipwreck salvagers and 19th-century seafarers among others.

Today the conch shell remains an enduring symbol of the Florida Keys. Many residents proudly call themselves “conchs,” and the mollusk’s meat is the key ingredient in conch chowder and fritters — both favorite local dishes. In 1982, the Keys island chain staged a symbolic secession from the U.S. and proclaimed itself the independent Conch Republic.

Celebrating Key West’s conch connection and seafaring heritage, the 2025 Conch Shell Blowing Contest is scheduled at noon in the lush garden of the Oldest House Museum, 322 Duval St.

Contestants take turns puckering up and raising a shell to their lips, endeavoring to make music (or at least respectable sounds) to impress the judging panel and a typically standing-room-only audience.

Nicknamed the “Conch Honk,” the challenge is presented each spring by the Old Island Restoration Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of Key West.

While many entrants only produce discordant bleats or feeble sputters, a few amaze spectators by blowing lengthy blasts or even parts of melodies. Past winners have trumpeted recognizable snippets of classic rock numbers, show tunes and composer Aram Khachaturian’s intricate “Sabre Dance,” generating enthusiastic applause from the crowd.

Entrants in the “Conch Honk” typically include men, women, young children and groups. All are judged on the quality, duration, loudness and novelty of the sounds they produce.

The 2025 contest is free to enter and watch, and gates open at 10:30 a.m. for conch shell–blowing lessons, a conch horn–cutting demonstration, other local crafts and food.

The three-day event — attracting up to 3,000 participants annually — is to be held at the West Martello Garden Club, 1100 Atlantic Blvd. at Higgs Beach, daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s free to all attendees.

“We are the only orchid festival and show in the Florida Keys,” said Sharon Douglas, second vice-president of the Key West Orchid Society. “This is the one event where orchid lovers can get all of their orchid needs met without driving to Miami.”

Activities are to include a blooming orchid exhibit, during which attendees can vote for “Best of Show” and take a guided tour, and daily raffles of blooming orchids.

Vendors include famed international grower Ten Shin Orchid Nursery of Taiwan. Attendees can pre-order a Ten Shin orchid at info@tenshinorchids.com for pick-up during the festival. Orders must be placed by Monday, Feb. 3.

The festival is organized by the Key West Orchid Society, whose purpose is to enhance the knowledge of orchids and their culture in the unique environment of the Florida Keys.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days, tour participants can venture beyond the walls and ornamental fences surrounding featured homes in the Flagler Avenue area of Key West.

The five stops include lovingly maintained large and small gardens with exotic palms, water features and pools, serene settings and vivid tropical plants.

Garden Club docents are to be on hand at each location, sharing detailed information with tour participants about the on-site plants and other elements.

Tour tickets are $30 per person if purchased in advance at keywestgardenclub.com or at West Martello Tower, the garden club’s headquarters beside the Atlantic Ocean at 1100 Atlantic Blvd. On tour days tickets are to be available at the garden venues for $35 per person.

Since the 1950s, the not-for-profit Key West Garden Club has maintained and planted a garden in the ruins of the Civil War–era West Martello Tower, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All plants are donated and cared for by club members and volunteers.

Today West Martello is the backdrop for spectacular orchids and bromeliads, mature fruit trees, indigenous plants, a colorful butterfly garden, a prehistoric garden and a peace park among other attractions. The garden is open free of charge from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except major holidays.

Scheduled each Tuesday from Jan. 28 through Feb. 25, the lectures begin at 6:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 200 Greene St. The fully accredited museum is an internationally recognized center for the excavation, preservation, research and exhibition of New World maritime artifacts.

Its unparalleled collection of 17th-century maritime and shipwreck antiquities includes priceless treasure and artifacts from the Spanish galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita, sunk in 1622; and objects from the English merchant slave ship Henrietta Marie, lost in 1700. The heritage of the three vessels, each discovered and excavated in waters off Key West under the auspices of museum founder Mel Fisher, is chronicled in the facility’s permanent exhibitions. 

The lecture series starts Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a showing of the mini documentary “Before Juneteenth: Florida’s Emancipations.” The film is paired with commentary about Key West’s unique role in the mid-1800s evolution of emancipation by Corey Malcom, Ph.D., lead historian for the Florida Keys History Center and the museum’s longtime director of archaeology. 

The following Tuesday, Feb. 4, is to feature scholar, artist and activist Dinizulu Gene Tinnie, discussing the Cuban slaving vessel Amistad, its seizure by captured Africans and its relevance to the maritime slave trade. The trade — including Key West’s place in the U.S. Navy’s anti-slavery efforts — is examined in the museum’s “Spirits of the Passage” exhibit.

A rare 16th-century shipwreck takes center stage Tuesday, Feb. 11, when Malcom guides an informal tour of a new exhibition titled “Uncovering the Santa Clara.” Malcom, who led the museum’s team that identified and excavated the 1564 vessel, also plans to display Santa Clara artifacts during a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility’s conservation laboratory. Carol Tedesco, author of “Treasure Coins of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha & the Santa Margarita” and other shipwreck-related books and archaeological “mystery” articles, is to speak Tuesday, Feb. 18. With a focus on silver coins and other intriguing artifacts, she will discuss the similarities and differences in Spanish Colonial shipwreck cargoes based on year, geography and twists of fate.

Finally, a presentation by members of the “golden crew” that found and recovered the 1622 sunken galleons Atocha and Margarita is scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 25. Tom Ford, Syd Jones, Andy Matroci and Vince Trotta will share their personal recollections of one of the greatest discoveries of Spanish Colonial sunken treasure in the world.

The first hour-long episode of the show’s third season premiered Wednesday, Jan. 8, on ABC. Typically, stars from TV, movies, sports and other professions compete with trivia knowledge to raise funds for charities. 

The Jan. 8 contestants were comedian W. Kamau Bell, a CNN series “United Shades of America” host; actor Max Greenfield, who plays Schmidt in the Fox sitcom “New Girl”; and actress Camilla Luddington, who portrays Jo Wilson in ABC’s medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Contestants correctly responded regarding two Keys personalities: the late songwriter Jimmy Buffett, whose hit songs include “Son of a Son of a Sailor” and “I Have Found Me a Home”; and Judy Blume, famed author of young-adult and adult books, who opened a Key West bookstore with her husband George Cooper. They also correctly identified the island as the birthplace of Key lime pie.

But participants did not correctly respond about two of Key West’s most famous residents: Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway, who lived and wrote on the island for most of the 1930s; and former President Harry S. Truman, whose “Little White House” was the president’s working headquarters during 11 trips to the island city. Today, the Little White House is Florida’s only presidential museum.

“Past ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ episodes have drawn audiences in excess of 4 million viewers,” said Diane Schmidt, chair of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. “We are ecstatic that the Florida Keys and Key West were highlighted on a game show that appeals to an audience whose demographics are important to our destination.”

“Celebrity Jeopardy!” is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, and distributed domestically by CBS Media Ventures and internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution, both units of Paramount.

Planned activities are inspired by the 1982 establishment of a U.S. Border Patrol blockade at the top of the 125-mile-long island chain that stopped traffic on the only road connecting the Keys to mainland Florida.

Set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, the free-admission show is to feature colorful booths lining the quay at Truman Waterfront Park. The site, backdropped by the blue water that surrounds the island city, stands at the end of Southard Street beyond Truman Annex.

Presented by the acclaimed nonprofit Key West Art Center, the show is to feature unique creations by 120 artists and crafters from around the United States and Canada. After decades of presenting separate art and craft shows during Key West’s typically balmy “winter” season, the center combined them in 2024 and continues that combined format this year.

The event is juried to ensure high-quality offerings and features a blend of local and visiting talents — all gathered to display their work to connoisseurs and collectors in Key West’s subtropical setting.

Attendees can expect to find two- and three-dimensional works in media including watercolor, oils, acrylics, sculpture, ceramics, collage and photography. Pieces may be executed in styles ranging from traditional to contemporary to tropical.

Crafters and skilled artisans are to showcase creations in glass and fabric, jewelry, pottery, metal, wood and more.

Planned highlights also include a popup showcase of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts’ 2025 “Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys” mural, consisting of nearly 100 small individual canvases decorated by Keys artists.

In addition, attendees can enjoy art and craft demonstrations by festival participants, taste treats from food trucks, a shaded patron comfort area and seating along the water.

Proceeds from the festival are to help support the Key West Art Center’s programs and maintain the historic 301 Front St. building that houses its gallery.

“I’m a firm believer that the one thing that makes people come back are experiences,” Vance says.

As the concierge director at The Perry Hotel & Marina on Stock Island, Vance can be found at least six days each week recommending — and booking — personalized experiential activities with his contacts at 72 local companies.

He’s one of only a handful of concierges who owns his own company. Johnny’s Sunset Excursions is contracted to the Lower Keys hotel and about 85% of his clients depart from The Perry’s on-site marina.

Vance, a native of Dayton, Ohio, worked in his family’s home improvement business until age 40. He first came to the Keys to visit a friend in Marathon, decided to move to Key West, and served as a concierge at several venues before founding his own company specializing in watersports.

“In my business we have one shot to get it right — that's what determines if people come back or not,” Vance says. “It's exactly why I love The Perry: big resort amenities with a boutique feel and an unforgettable ambience that makes people want to return.”

The savory seafood menu is to feature fresh grilled Florida spiny lobster, peel-and-eat Key West pink shrimp, stone crab claws, smoked fish dip with crackers, fried local fish, lobster bisque and more. All seafood is to be prepared and served by Keys fishermen and their families.

Traditional regional favorites such as conch chowder and conch fritters also await attendees. Other edibles include hot dogs, hamburgers, sweet flan and Key lime pie. Beverages ranging from soft drinks to beer and wine to island-style cocktails are to be available for purchase.

Plans also call for nonstop live music by regional musicians and bands. Entertainers are to include headliner Maggie Baugh, the Marshall Morlock Band, students from the Bahama Village Music Program, the Double Down Band and Uncle Rico, among others.

Vendor booths are to offer arts and crafts themed to reflect marine life and the Keys’ flourishing fishing community, as well as other locally handcrafted items. Additional booths are to feature educational information from regional conservation organizations, while an eco-activity area is planned for kids.

Admission is $10 per adult, good for both days, and includes entry in a raffle for $250 worth of seafood. Children under age 12 are admitted free to the family-friendly event, as are veterans and active-duty military members with military I.Ds.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association’s sustainable fisheries management programs and scholarships for Florida Keys students.

The Presidential Families Weekend Forum is to be the centerpiece of Presidents Day weekend activities presented by the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation and The Society of Presidential Descendants. Scheduled Thursday through Monday, Feb. 13-17, events are headquartered at the 111 Front St. residence where Truman spent 11 working vacations during his 1945-1953 administration. Today the property is Florida’s only presidential museum.

In addition, actor and author Clifton Truman Daniel, Truman’s oldest grandson, is to portray his grandfather in the renowned one-man play “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!” at the former commander in chief’s retreat.

Saturday’s forum is to feature Daniel, Carter’s grandson James Carter, Eisenhower’s granddaughter Mary Jean Eisenhower, Roosevelt’s great-grandson Tweed Roosevelt, Taft’s great-granddaughter Patricia Taft, Grant’s great-great-grandson Ulysses Grant Dietz, and Cleveland’s great-great-grandson Massee McKinley.

Titled “Historical Preservation: Artifacts, Objects, and Sites,” the group’s panel discussion is to be moderated by Dr. Kurt Graham, former director of Missouri’s Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum. Gates open at 4 p.m. and the presentation is set for 4:30 p.m. on the gracious grounds of the Little White House.

Performances of “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!” are scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Feb. 16 and 17, also on the Little White House grounds. An engaging exploration of Truman’s life and presidency, the production features “Harry” addressing the audience on topics including a president's role, war concerns and his predecessors in office. 

Other long weekend activities include a kickoff “Happy Hour at Harry’s” cocktail gathering at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, a Presidents Day cookout set for midday Monday, guided tours of the Little White House and self-guided botanical lawn tours.

In addition to being Truman’s working headquarters, the Little White House also has hosted former presidents Carter, Eisenhower, Taft, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton.

The annual "Red Shoe Drop," staged outside the Bourbon St. Pub complex on the island’s famed Duval Street, was one of Key West’s warmer-weather takeoffs on the traditional New Year's Eve "ball drop" in New York City's Times Square.

Elegantly dressed in a blue sequined gown encrusted with thousands of hand-applied rhinestones, Roberts -- a seasoned cabaret performer known for portraying divas including Cher and Bette Midler -- presided over the night’s festivities while sitting in the giant red shoe that was suspended from the complex’s second-story balcony.

“I never thought I'd be in the shoe, so it's a little surreal,” said Roberts from his perch above the crowd. “The throngs of people and the energy are unbelievable — it’s like a celebration of Key West.

“It's every bit of Key West in one little place,” he added.

Seconds before midnight, Roberts was lowered in the shoe toward the street below. As the clock struck and 2025 began, he landed and raised a ceremonial bottle of champagne while the watching revelers cheered and applauded.

January 2025

The Key West Literary Seminar (Jan. 9-12; kwls.org) presents some 20 leading American and international writers, exploring the topic of “Family” in solo and paired readings, lectures, and panel discussions. The keynote speaker is John Irving, renowned author of “The World According to Garp” among other standouts. Headquartered at Key West’s San Carlos Institute, the seminar includes Sunday afternoon presentations that are open to the public.

The Florida Keys Celtic Festival (Jan. 11-12; floridakeyscelticfestival.com) enables visitors to experience the sights and sounds of the Scottish Highlands and the Emerald Isle in Marathon in the Middle Florida Keys. Attractions include live music by Albannach, The Screaming Orphans, Jamison and West of Galway, plus bagpipers, Irish dancers, highland athletic games, sheepherding demonstrations, authentic Celtic food, children's games, vendors and more.

The Southernmost Regatta (Jan. 20-25; southernmostregatta.com) brings top sailing teams from around the world to compete in the azure waters off Key West, showcasing colorful sails and avid sportsmanship during five consecutive days of racing. Competition is open to One Design and ORC Racing/Cruising Keelboats. Spectators can watch the races from various waterfront venues.

The Key West Half Marathon & Runfest (Jan. 18-19; keywesthalfmarathon.com) attracts thousands of runners from around the U.S. and other countries to compete in a top U.S. winter half marathon, run beside the Atlantic Ocean, and enjoy Key West’s typically balmy “winter” weather. The half marathon takes place Jan. 19, with shorter races and additional events rounding out the schedule. 

Mile 0 Fest (Jan. 21-25, mile0fest.com) features more than 60 celebrated musicians and bands from the Americana and “Red Dirt” genres, all performing in subtropical Key West. Attendees can enjoy five nights of open-air main stage shows at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, plus acoustic jams and songwriter swaps at other island locations.

The 33rd annual Kelly McGillis Classic International Women’s & Girl’s Flag Football Championship (Jan. 21-27; iwffa.com) in Key West is expected to draw more than 30 teams of women and girls representing the U.S. and countries around the world for flag football games along with team-building activities and social gatherings. The popular event is named for McGillis, the “Top Gun” movie actress and former Key West resident.

The Island Boat Show (Jan. 24-26; islandboatshow.com), billed as the Florida Keys’ premier boat show, is held on the grounds of Island Community Church in Islamorada. Planned attractions include top boat brands and dealers, a large silent auction, food and drink vendors, and nautical merchandise for the entire family. 

The Big Pine & Lower Keys Nautical Expo (Jan. 25-26; lowerkeyschamber.com) brings more than 100 vendors to Big Pine Key for a large marine marketplace event. Attendees can find values on gear and everything imaginable for boating, fishing, diving and more, plus marine-influenced clothing, art, jewelry and crafts, live entertainment, food and beverages. The event takes place on the grounds of the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce visitor center.

February 2025

The Winter Star Party (Jan. 27-Feb. 2; scas.org/winter-star-party) draws several hundred astronomers and astro-imagers from around the world to view southern constellations, comets and stars in the Lower Florida Keys’ clear night skies — virtually the only place in the continental U.S. where they can be viewed. Lectures, programs and other attractions round out the event that’s held beside the Atlantic Ocean at Scout Key.

The Upper Keys Garden Walk (Feb. 15; gardenclubupperkeys.org) is a unique self-guided tour that showcases beautiful private garden properties in the Upper Keys. The event also includes an art show and Garden Market.

The Florida Keys Seafood Festival (Feb. 15-16; floridakeysseafoodfestival.com) at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park features the freshest Keys seafood — all caught, cleaned, prepared and served by local fishermen. Other attractions include live music, an eco-discovery zone for kids, and vendors selling Keys-made wares and art. 

Presidential Families Weekend (Feb. 15-17; trumanlittlewhitehouse.org/foundation/events) celebrates Presidents’ Day weekend at the state of Florida’s only presidential site, the Harry S. Truman Little White House. Events include a panel discussion with presidential descendants, performances of the stage production, “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!” and a President’s Day cookout. 

The Sombrero Beach Run (Feb. 21-23; sombrerobeachrun.org) in Marathon attracts several hundred people for a weekend of running and sunning. The running event is held Saturday, Feb. 22, at Sombrero Beach, located at the end of Sombrero Beach Road at mile marker 50. Awards are given to overall finishers in a 5k walk and 5k and 10k runs. Those completing the event’s 15k challenge receive special gifts. Celebrations and beach activities fill the weekend.

The Key West Art & Craft Festival (Feb. 22-23; keywestartcenter.com) is a juried show that draws scores of artists and artisans displaying their creations. Vendor booths are set up along the harbor at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park, and the popular event also features artist demonstrations.

The Gigantic Nautical Market (Feb. 22-23; rotarynauticalmarket.com) in Islamorada brings bargains on everything nautical including boats, dive gear, furnishings for boat and home, art, clothing, fishing gear and more from hundreds of vendors. Plans call for as many as 18 food trucks on the grounds of Islamorada’s Founders Park during the event.

March 2025

The Conch Shell Blowing Contest (March 8; oirf.org) has been a Key West tradition for over 60 years. Held at the Oldest House Museum and Garden, the unique challenge celebrates the historic importance of the conch mollusk in the Keys and features contestants from toddlers to seniors attempting to make “music” using fluted conch shells.

The Original Marathon Seafood Festival (March 8-9; marathonseafoodfestival.com) lures thousands of seafood lovers to the Middle Keys to savor Keys-harvested seafood including lobster, stone crab, shrimp and fish prepared and served by Florida Keys fishermen. Additional attractions at the family-friendly feast include musical acts, raffles, prizes, a kids’ area and vendors offering artisan wares.

The second annual St. Paddy’s Island Run 5k/10k (March 16; runsignup.com/Race/FL/Islamorada/StPattysIslandRun) is hosted by Florida Keys Brewing Company in Islamorada. Runners are to receive a free beer, finisher’s medal and T-shirt — and can enjoy a St. Paddy’s party in the beer garden after the race.

NAS Key West Southernmost Air Spectacular (March 29-30; keywestairshow.com) brings high-flying action to Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Field near Key West, with aerial demonstrations by military and civilian performers including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team.

April 2025

The 7 Mile Bridge Run (April 5; 7mbrun.com) attracts a field of 1,500 runners to the city of Marathon each year to compete on a course across one of the world’s longest segmental bridges, the centerpiece of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway.

The Florida Keys Island Fest (April 5-6; islamoradachamber.com/island-fest) highlights nearly 100 artists and crafters in a juried art show, along with live music, homemade boat races and a “Taste of Islamorada” competition for foodies. The 33rd annual event takes place at Islamorada’s Founders Park.

The Historic Days Celebration (April 3-6); keywesthistoricdayscelebration.com) highlights the Key West Woman’s Club’s 110th anniversary with history-focused tours, presentations, and panel discussions at the club’s headquarters, the Hellings Curry Museum, and other island locations. Receptions are planned featuring appetizers prepared from recipes in the “Key West Woman’s Club Cookbook,” while other events include a High Tea of Years Gone By.

The 43rd annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration (April 18-27; conchrepublic.com) commemorates the Florida Keys’ symbolic 1982 secession from the United States and rebirth as the independent and eccentric Conch Republic. Events are held in Key West and typically include a parade along Duval Street, a mock battle at sea with tall ships, sunset sailing cruises, parties and the wacky Great Conch Republic Drag Race.

May 2025 

The Key West Songwriters Festival (April 30-May 4; facebook.com/keywestsongwritersfest) features America’s foremost performing songwriters and artists at dozens of concerts staged in intimate, audience-friendly Key West settings. Typically included are more than 50 shows and 200-plus country and pop hitmakers. Now in its 29th year, the festival revolves around five days and nights where live music bliss introduces crowds to the faces, voices and stories behind the songs.

The I.CARE Trash Derby and Festival (May 1-4; icaretrashderby.com) includes two days of trash collection by scuba divers and on-land participants, who compete for prizes for the largest hauls at cleanup locations throughout the Keys. Divers can register with their favorite dive shop while non-divers can assemble teams for land-based debris removal. A public festival May 4 at Islamorada’s Founders Park celebrates the cleanup with award ceremonies, live music, food and booths by Florida Keys conservation organizations.

 June 2025 

The College of the Florida Keys Swim Around Key West (June 14); swimaroundkeywest.org) is a 12.5-mile endurance swim, open to individuals and relay teams, around the island of Key West through Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico waters. Organized by The College of the Florida Keys, it’s billed as the only sanctioned, insured and U.S. Coast Guard-permitted swimming race around Key West. Associated events include shorter open-water swims. 

Key West Pride (June 22-29; gaykeywestfl.com/pride/) features a lively roster of fun for Key West’s LGBTQ visitors, friends and allies on the island known for its accepting “One Human Family” atmosphere. Events typically include pool parties, late-night drag shows and soirees, on-the-water adventures, a street fair, pageants and a colorful parade.

July 2025

The Key Lime Festival (July 3-7; keylimefestival.com) in Key West celebrates the world’s most sensational citrus with a bountiful array of festivities across the island where Key lime pie was conceived. Over five days, lovers of the lime can indulge in activities including a gravity-defying Key lime pie drop competition from the top of the Key West Lighthouse, a Key lime cocktail sip and stroll, Key lime brunches and dinners, and the world-famous Key lime pie eating championship set for July 4.

Celebrating Freedom Parade & Fireworks (July 4; 305-451-1414) in Key Largo is the Upper Keys area’s 49th annual salute to America’s independence. The fun kicks off with a midmorning community parade featuring patriotic floats along the Florida Keys Overseas Highway. The Celebrating Freedom event with live music and vendors takes place in the evening, culminating in a magnificent fireworks show over Blackwater Sound.

The 41st annual Underwater Music Festival (July 11-12; lowerkeyschamber.com), a sub-sea concert staged to promote environmentally responsible diving and reef protection, begins with a July 11 welcome event at Mote Marine Laboratory’s Summerland Key facility. On July 12, divers and snorkelers submerge at Looe Key Reef alongside costumed characters “playing” faux instruments. Participants listen to ocean-themed music that’s piped underwater, interspersed with messages about ways to enjoy the underwater world while minimizing environmental impacts.

Hemingway Days (July 22-27; hemingwaydays.com); honors the literary legacy and Key West lifestyle of Ernest Hemingway, the American literary giant who lived and wrote on the island for most of the 1930s. Events include the legendary Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, the wacky Running of the Bulls, a commemoration of the 126th anniversary of Hemingway's birth, a museum exhibit, a marlin tournament, a 5k run and a street fair.

August 2025

At Key West Lobsterfest (Aug. 7-10; keywestlobsterfest.com), seafood lovers can chow down on Florida’s clawless lobster. The tasty “feast-ival” features a savory schedule of events ranging from a traditional lobster boil to a pub crawl, pool parties, a brunch, and the lively annual street fair and concert Aug. 9.

The City Bikes Key Largo Triathlon (Aug. 15-17; gameonraceevents.com) set at Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, brings athletes of all ages to compete in Olympic and sprint distance triathlon and duathlon races as well as an Olympic distance aquabike race. 

Just a Few Friends Key West (Aug. 29-Sept. 1; justafewfriendskeywest.com) is a memorial celebration honoring Key West’s favorite son, Jimmy Buffett, on the second anniversary of his Sept. 1, 2023 passing. The weekend is filled with tours, bar crawls, rum tastings and music events. The highlight is the Second Line Parade along Duval Street, culminating in a free music festival at Truman Waterfront Park with local and national entertainment.

September 2025 

Womenfest Key West (Sept. 3-7; gaykeywestfl.com/womenfest) is Key West’s popular annual festival for lesbians and their friends — designed to enable singles, couples and groups of women to experience the atmosphere of openness and acceptance that has made Key West an internationally acclaimed lesbian and gay vacation destination. Activities range from beach parties, snorkeling and sunset cruises to live entertainment and more.

The Swim for Alligator Lighthouse (Sept. 13; swimalligatorlight.com) is a world-class, 8-mile open-water swim to the iconic Alligator Reef Lighthouse and back to shore in Islamorada. The unique and challenging experience can be conquered solo or on 2-, 3- or 4-person relay teams. Proceeds from the race go toward the effort to fully restore the 152-year old lighthouse. 

October 2025

Taste the Keys (Oct. 1-31; tastethekeys.com) provides a culinary journey through Key Largo and the Upper Keys to experience delectable Florida Keys cuisine on weekly foodie tours by trolley, culminating in a cook-off competition event. Participating locations include Skipper’s Dockside, Playa Largo, The Catch, Gus’ Grille at Reefhouse Resort & Marina, Mrs. Mac’s and many more.

REEF Fest (Oct. 16-19; reef.org/reeffest), hosted by the Reef Environmental Education Foundation in Key Largo, enables ocean lovers to celebrate their love of marine life and learn about the latest in conservation through dive, snorkel and kayak trips along with ocean-themed seminars and social events.

Key West Fantasy Fest (Oct. 17-26; fantasyfest.com) is an annual 10-day costuming and masking extravaganza that features dozens of exciting and exotic events. The theme for 2025 is “Bedtime Stories & Magical Monsters.” The fun begins with the exuberant Goombay Festival and continues with standouts including the Royal Coronation of the 2025 Fantasy Fest king and queen, lavish Headdress Ball, wacky and wonderful Key West Pet Masquerade, colorful Captain Morgan Masquerade March, and the world-famous Key West Fantasy Fest Parade set for Oct. 25. 

The Zombie Bike Ride (Oct. 19; zombiebikeride.com) features thousands of “the bicycling dead” in a lighthearted pre-Halloween trek along Key West’s Atlantic Ocean shoreline and streets. Visiting and local adults, kids and even a few pets dress in offbeat zombie garb, ragged finery and scary face paint for the spooky spectacle, which also includes “Zombieland” pre-ride festivities and a rollicking after party.

November 2025

The Race World Offshore Key West World Championship (Nov. 2-9); raceworldoffshore.com/key-west) brings the world’s top powerboat teams to compete in high-speed races in the waters surrounding the island city. Activities include a parade of powerboats and teams down Duval Street, parties, concerts, and viewing from the Race Village at Truman Waterfront Park and from waterfront hotels and restaurants. The spectator-friendly course layout means fans can watch from vantage points breathtakingly close to the action.

The Key West Film Festival (November dates to be announced; keywestff.com), named one of the top 25 coolest film fests in the world by Moviemaker magazine, includes screenings of as many as 75 films, panel discussions, parties and the presentation of awards including the Golden Key for emerging talent and excellence in costume design.

Key West Holiday Fest (Nov 26-Dec. 31; keywestholidayfest.com)  includes a merry range of celebrations during Key West’s busy holiday season, starting the night before Thanksgiving and ending on New Year’s Eve. Events traditionally include the lighting of the Harbor Walk of Lights, tours of historic inns, a lighted boat parade, festive Old Town Trolley and Conch Train tours to see neighborhoods elaborately decorated with holiday lights, seasonal artisan markets and bazaars, and quirky New Year’s Eve “drops” that spoof New York City’s annual Times Square “ball drop.”

Experience a Waterfront Winter Wonderland (Dec. 12-27; waterfrontwinterwonderland.com) at Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater in Truman Waterfront Park. Despite the island’s typically balmy holiday breezes, the festive grounds “chill” with an ice skating rink and “snow” showers. The family-friendly event features rides including a Ferris wheel, a carousel, swings and giant slides. Visits with Santa and live music add to the holiday atmosphere. 

New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) in Key West includes a series of delightfully quirky “drops” that spoof New York City’s annual Times Square “ball drop.” Standout celebrations to welcome the New Year include the midnight “drop” of a female impersonator in a spangled super-sized red high heel shoe outside the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex; the “drop” of a gigantic manmade conch shell atop the roof of Sloppy Joe’s bar; the lowering of a “pirate wench” from atop the mast of the tall ship America 2.0 at Schooner Wharf Bar; and the midnight “landing” of a replica Pan Am aircraft carrying a costumed flight attendant at First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery.

The lively open-air festival is expected to draw more than 60 solo performers and bands, all representing the musical styles that blend elements of rock, country and the American roots tradition. The event is named for Key West’s geographical location at the beginning of U.S. Highway 1, which is marked with a green “MILE 0” sign.

Attendees can enjoy five nights of main stage shows at Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater, located at 21 Quay Road, beside Truman Waterfront Park. Intimate acoustic jams and songwriter swaps at other island locations are to complement the main-stage action.

The musical lineup features groups and bands ranging from emerging artists to critically acclaimed Americana and “Red Dirt” stars. As well as the genre standouts already listed, performers include Stoney LaRue, Wade Bowen, 49 Winchester, Django Walker, Bri Bagwell, Adam Hood, Taylor Hunnicutt and other notables.

Now in its eighth year, Mile 0 Fest has become a popular musical gathering acclaimed for its laid-back Key West atmosphere, balmy subtropical weather and the opportunity for up-close interaction with featured performers.

While enjoying the onstage shows, audience members can purchase offerings from local food trucks, mobile bars and other vendors. As well as the musical experience, they can choose to participate in Key West activities ranging from a fishing derby to offbeat “Tipsy Tikis” cocktail cruises.

New culinary experiences and dining options at hotels throughout the island chain, from Key Largo to Key West, also are unveiled.

Enhanced attractions include Key West's Oldest House Museum, showcasing a pioneering life in Key West from the 1820s with added artifacts. And the restored Elizabeth Bishop House, where the celebrated poet lived and wrote in Key West during the 1930s and ‘40s, is to offer visitor tours slated to begin in mid-March.

Here’s what’s new in the Keys:

Keys Airlift

At Key West International Airport (EYW), a 49,000-square-foot Concourse A expansion is targeted for completion in April 2025, and its extended TSA lanes are to be completed in September 2025. Overall airport improvements are slated for final completion in summer 2026 — with eight passenger boarding jet bridges, a 446-panel electrochromic glass curtain wall, state-of-the-art baggage carousels and additional restrooms. Dining offerings are to include a First Call Beach Bar at baggage claim, a Southern Point Bar, Chili's restaurant and Farm 2 Air Market. Six carriers — Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, United and Silver — currently serve EYW with more than 20 nonstop domestic flights and destinations. Islamorada's 15-acre, 214-room Three Waters Resort & Marina, a Tribute Portfolio Resort, Marriott Bonvoy's collection of independent hotels, has opened the brand's first in the Keys. The Middle Keys' Faro Blanco Resort, known for its iconic 65-foot Faro Blanco Lighthouse that dates from the 1950s, recently completed $14 million in renovations. Enhancements include updates to both the Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, a Curio Collection by Hilton, and sister property, the Courtyard by Marriott Faro Blanco Resort, located at 1996 Overseas Highway in Marathon. In Marathon, Isla Bella Beach Resort & Spa has become 95% plastic-free, installing drinking water stations throughout the property and replacing plastic bottles with reusable aluminum bottles and single-use takeout service ware with reusable utensils and service ware made from sustainable materials. The hotel also has implemented a 1% impact fee, paid by guests on checkout, to create on-site programming and allocate funds to Florida Keys nonprofit organizations. Isla Bella has partnered with the Conch Republic Marine Army, a Florida Keys volunteer group dedicated to cleanup and restoration of mangrove habitats in the Keys, donating $85,000 for acquisition of a new 33-foot boat offering cleanup trips. In Key Largo, Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) is constructing its new $6 million REEF Ocean Exploration Center for Marine Conservation, to be unveiled June 7-8, 2025, to coincide with World Ocean Day. The 4,000-square-foot, two-story facility is to feature an ocean exploration gallery, science discovery classroom, ocean outreach gallery, program planning areas and a second-floor balcony, as well as exhibits celebrating scientific innovation, history, humanities and arts. REEF programs include educational experiences about fish identification, invasive lionfish and citizen science. The center is to be a launchpad for inspiring future ocean stewards, pioneering research, fostering collaboration and transforming marine conservation. In Islamorada, The Protect Center’s interactive museum Exploratorium has opened with nearly a dozen aquariums and educational exhibits about marine mammal rescue, veterinary medicine, conservation research and Keys ecology. In addition, The Protect Center’s boutique gift shop Sustain, offering mostly sustainable items, features a new “re-fillery” enabling visitors and residents to refill eco-friendly home and personal care supplies of cleaners, soaps, shampoos, body wash and other necessities to reduce single-use plastics. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Animal Farm, a sanctuary where more than 150 animals are cared for with the help of selected county inmates guided by Farmer Jeanne Selander, has a new pair of two-toed sloths. Sid, age 10, and 9-year-old Sylvia were gifted by the Shell Factory Nature Park in Fort Myers, Florida, which closed its doors in September. Key West's Elizabeth Bishop House, where the celebrated United States poet lived and wrote during the 1930s and 1940s, is to open March 6, 2025, after a structural restoration; visitor tours are scheduled to begin the week of March 11. The Elizabeth Bishop's Postcards exhibit, on loan from Vassar College Libraries and showcasing Bishop's postcard correspondence from early life to her final years, is to run March 10 through May 5, with closing events including a conversation with the curators scheduled April 24-27. Bishop was the United States poet laureate in 1949-50 and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1956. She purchased the 19th-century eyebrow house in 1938 for $2,000 in financial support from her partner Louise Crane. The on-site Elizabeth Bishop Garden — to include plants from a list drawn from botanical and garden references in Bishop’s letters, poems, paintings and sketches — is to feature an accessible garden pathway leading through exhibits illuminating the poet’s life and work, and to a small seating area for reflection and reading. A rear yard presentation area is to seat about 50. Celebrating its 195th year, the Oldest House Museum, located at 322 Duval St., showcases life in Key West during the 1820s and '30s. The Wreckers' Room — where Captain Francis Watlington, a Florida state representative from 1858 to 1861, lived during his final days — is refurbished with newly conserved pieces including a blacklist for illegal wrecking practices, an insurance policy for "pirate-infested waters," and navigational charts from the 1600s to the 1800s. The Oldest House now features an original 1825 Dubois & Stodart box piano — one of only three in the U.S. on exhibit — a Cuban mahogany ice box, elegant whale oil lamps, and newly restored original pieces that arrived on a ship with 16-year-old Emeline Johnson, married nearly 200 years ago. The museum's restored Cistern Room is to feature an exhibit, "Water at the Watlington’s,” focusing on limited water on a frontier island, beginning Jan. 10 thru March. Key West’s retired U.S. Coast Guard Cutter INGHAM, docked at Truman Waterfront Park at the end of Southard Street as the INGHAM Maritime Museum and National Historic Landmark, is now open for sunset celebrations on Fridays, depending on weather. INGHAM was in service for 52 years, from 1936 to 1988, and is the only Coast Guard cutter afloat to receive two Presidential Unit Citations for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. The Key West Wildlife Center is unveiling a new elevated tropical green wildlife clinic and renovated wildlife recovery aviary, both targeted for completion in early 2025, within the 7-acre Sonny McCoy Indigenous Park at 1801 White St. near Atlantic Boulevard. The new $2.4 million facility is to feature a large aviary with expansive room for flight conditioning and a clinic with a dedicated treatment area and additional interior space for patient care. The new facility also provides more exterior space for rehabilitation and protected space for education and outreach. The wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility, with a 24-hour wildlife rescue line, provides rehabilitation for native wildlife including birds, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. Keys Environment

On Big Pine Key, Save Our Key Deer Inc., led by founder-president Valerie Preziosi, is opening a new state-authorized Key deer rehabilitation facility in late December. The center is to provide care for orphaned fawns and medical assistance to Key deer injured by vehicles or needing attention because of entanglements, objects embedded in their hoofs or legs, illness, infections or wounds. While not open to visitors, the new facility is to provide webcam viewing and educational information on social media platforms. Save Our Key Deer conducts scientific research, including a study on the availability of natural drinking water sources for Key deer. The Monroe County Artificial Reefs Department has deployed 10 of 45 concrete power poles at a new artificial reef area about 16 nautical miles northeast of Key West in federal waters off the Gulf of Mexico. Additional poles and structures are to be added to the site to increase habitat complexity and space for marine life. “This deployment is the first in a long line of projects being developed to provide several ecosystem and economic-related services,” said Hanna Koch, Monroe County’s artificial reefs director. Monroe County has been awarded $15 million from the state of Florida to create a Florida Keys artificial reefs program. The most recent artificial reef placed in Keys waters was the 524-foot decommissioned Air Force ship General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, sunk off Key West in 2009. Visit monroecounty-fl.gov/reefs.

Marking its fifth anniversary, Mission: Iconic Reefs has launched a new website about the NOAA-led, partner-driven $35 million program to restore seven reef sites in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The seven include Carysfort Reef, Horseshoe Reef, Cheeca Rocks, Newfound Harbor, Eastern Dry Rocks, Sombrero Reef and Looe Key Reef. “When Mission: Iconic Reefs launched it was only an idea — nothing more than words on paper,” said Jennifer Moore, the program’s senior manager. "Practitioners are outplanting corals on the reef, research is underway alongside restoration, and terabytes of data are being collected and analyzed. Each multi-creativity event is to feature a mosaic mural made up of nearly 100 small canvases decorated by Florida Keys artists, paired with performances by outstanding local musicians. Presented annually by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the Connections Project is designed as an experiential way to connect people with members of the Keys’ dynamic arts community.

“The Connections Project 2025 will be a fabulous blend of what we’ve done in past years with some fresh ideas for this season,” said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Arts Council. “Attendees can expect the usual high quality of creative expression, along with a surprise or two that adds to the fun.”

The series’ Jan. 8 grand opening reception is set for 5:30 p.m. at Berkshire Hathaway in Marathon, located at 9141 Overseas Highway, in conjunction with a Marathon Chamber of Commerce gathering. Subsequent popup events are planned from Key Largo to Key West at venues including galleries and cultural spaces, open-air art shows and other locations that support local creativity.

A unique mosaic mural is to be unveiled at every event, with each featuring a collection of colorful 6-by-8-inch canvases. The small canvases typically include works in oils, watercolor, photography, collage, mixed media, quilting, beadwork and more, depending on the individual artist’s whim and talent.

Named for and endorsed by the Golden Globe–winning actress, director and former Key West resident who starred in “Top Gun” and “Witness,” the championship includes three days of competition paired with pre- and post-tournament team-building activities and gatherings.

More than 30 teams from countries including the United States, El Salvador, Morocco, Guatemala and Mexico are expected to participate, said Diane Beruldsen, president and founder of the International Women’s Flag Football Association that presents the tournament.

The event attracts players ranging from 8 years old to seniors who compete in multiple divisions, develop their skills during flag football clinics and enjoy camaraderie during contests, parties and other social events.

Special guests include Negar Hassanzadeh, an acclaimed Iranian actress and producer, who plans to film the week’s activities for a documentary production.

Following three days of clinics and islandwide festivities for players, the tournament’s opening ceremony is slated for 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Half Shell Raw Bar, 231 Margaret St.

Kelly’s Players Parade, scheduled just after the ceremony, is to feature tournament teams proceeding along Key West’s renowned Duval Street and seaport area. Players typically wear team uniforms or costumes and display their country or state flags or team banners in the lively procession, which also includes floats and marching bands.

The official mandatory registration party follows at 8 p.m. at the Bourbon St. Pub, 724 Duval St.

Games are to begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26, at Wicker Field Sports Complex, 3155 Flagler Ave. The competition is to culminate Sunday afternoon with hard-fought playoffs.

An awards event for juniors’ and girls’ teams is to follow the final game at Wicker Field. Awards for women’s division champions are to be presented during a Sunday night dinner at El Siboney, 5501 5th St. on Stock Island.

Clinics and social events Monday, Jan. 27, are to round out the week’s roster.

The first Key West concert is set for Sunday, Jan. 19, with the symphony’s premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece “Candide.” Blending humor and existential thought to explore life’s absurdities, the semi-staged concert version of the Bernstein classic features minimal sets and costumes, with a stellar cast of actor-vocalists and the South Florida Symphony Chorus performing together onstage.

The orchestra’s performance Friday, Feb. 14, is to focus on compositions that celebrate love — appropriately for Valentine’s Day — headlined by the swashbuckling “Don Juan,” a musical tale of the fictional Spanish rogue, by Richard Strauss. Also featuring the composer’s “Four Last Songs” with soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra, the program is rounded out by Hector Berlioz’ “King Lear Overture” and “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss II.

Homage to iconic composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart characterizes the symphony’s final concert in Key West, set for Saturday, March 15. The centerpiece of the program is Mozart’s hauntingly beautiful “Requiem,” unfinished upon its creator’s death but nevertheless remaining a highlight of his career. With vocal performances by four remarkable soloists and the South Florida Symphony Chorus, “Requiem” is paired with Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40” in a full-program salute to his timeless compositional mastery.

Under Alfonso’s musical direction since its founding in Key West, the symphony has grown to perform for audiences throughout South Florida. As well as consummate musicianship, it is recognized for creatively dynamic, educational and engaging concert presentations.

All three Key West concerts are to take place at 7:30 p.m. at Key West’s Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Road on the campus of The College of the Florida Keys.

The Southernmost Regatta, powered by Sailing Inc., features five days of competitive racing and surrounding activities. Attractions for teams include the warm-water January sailing in the Florida Keys’ subtropical climate, reliable breezes, a high level of competition and Key West’s unique atmosphere.

The regatta is open to One Design keelboats and Offshore Racing Congress racing and cruising keelboats in multiple classes. Spectators can expect adrenaline-fueled racing action as well as activities where they can interact with participating teams in a casual island setting.

“Key West continues to be one of the best locations for competitive racing in America,” said regatta chairman Martin Kullman. “This year is the J/111 North American championship, and it will be held during the Southernmost Regatta.”

As well as the J/111 class, race aficionados can expect to see boats in the J/70 and ORC Performance classes among others.

Races are slated to begin at 11 a.m. Jan. 20-24 on Atlantic Ocean courses just off Key West’s shore and inside the continental United States’ only coral barrier reef. Plans call for 10 total races for all classes.

Headquartered at Key West’s historic San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St., the seminar is to feature some 20 writers of novels, essays, poetry and more. They are to discuss aspects of the theme ranging from human connections to family dysfunction, and ways interpersonal ties shape people and infuse the stories they tell.

Among featured presenters are Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Harding, whose multigenerational family sagas include “This Other Eden;” American Book Award winner Emily Raboteau, author of “Lessons for Survival: Mothering Against the Apocalypse” among others; Dani Shapiro, who has penned bestsellers including “Inheritance” and “Signal Fires”; S.A. Cosby, known for his “southern noir” crime dramas lauded by Barack Obama; Malinda Lo, whose most recent work is the LGBTQ coming-of-age novel “A Scatter of Light”; and Nathan Hill, whose highly acclaimed novel “Wellness” explores contemporary marriage.

The seminar begins Thursday, Jan. 9, with an evening keynote presentation by John Irving, internationally renowned author of literary standouts including “The World According to Garp,” “The Cider House Rules” and “A Prayer for Owen Meany.”

Subsequent days feature solo and paired readings, lectures, panel discussions, book signings, and receptions at historic sites where attendees and authors can mingle. Social events include a Thursday night reception at Key West’s Audubon House & Tropical Gardens and a Sunday luncheon at the Oldest House Museum & Garden.

The 2025 literary seminar is sold out, but the program includes Sunday afternoon presentations that are open to the public. Beginning at 2 p.m., these include readings and commentary by several of the featured writers. Admission is free with first-come, first-served seating.

The challenge attracts thousands of enthusiasts each year from around the U.S. and many other countries, drawn by the chance to run beside the Atlantic Ocean and through the streets of Florida’s southernmost island city.

Associated 5k and 10k runs are planned Saturday, Jan. 18. In addition, an 8k race is scheduled alongside Sunday’s half marathon for those who prefer a shorter distance.

Pre-race and social events are to take place Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 16-18, while post-race fun Sunday, Jan. 19, includes the Papa’s Pilar Rum Stroll and Key West Beach N’ Beer Mile.

The athletic action begins with Thursday’s 6-8 p.m. Runners’ Meet & Greet at the Half Shell Raw Bar at 231 Margaret St. in the Key West Historic Seaport.

A race expo and packet pickup are set for 2-7 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday outside the Half Shell Raw Bar. Runners also can pick up their bibs from 7-10 p.m. both evenings at Fit2Run at 211 Duval St.

Saturday’s 5k and 10k races are to start at 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., respectively, at Higgs Beach beside the Atlantic Ocean on Atlantic Boulevard.

Sunday’s half marathon and 8k are scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. at the corner of Caroline Street and Trumbo Road in the seaport area.

Half-marathon runners follow a flat, fast 13.1-mile course through Key West’s scenic Old Town and along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline before finishing near the intersection of Caroline and Margaret streets.

After the race, an awards party and concert by the Cayo Ritmo Big Band are planned outside the Half Shell Raw Bar.

Awards are to be presented to first- through third-place male and female finishers in five-year age groups ranging from 9 and under to 75 and over, and to the top overall competitors and those in the masters division.

Running enthusiasts who can’t be in Key West can take part remotely via the “run anywhere” registration option.

Entry is $143.95 per person for the half marathon, $75 per person for the 5k, $78 for the 8k and $83 for the 10k. Prices are to increase Jan. 1, 2025. Special package prices are available for participants who register for multiple races. Military and local discounts are offered. Each entrant is to receive a tech race shirt and finisher medal.

Scheduled to take place at Higgs Beach, located at 1000 Atlantic Blvd. on the Atlantic Ocean, the all-day open-air challenge is sanctioned by USA Track and Field. Spectators can watch entrants ranging in age from teens to seniors vying for prizes and personal best vaults in multiple categories.

The 2025 competition is to draw elite pro and amateur athletes from the U.S. and other countries. Past participants have included national title holders, Olympic Games contenders and international champions.

Pre-competition activities are to begin Friday, Jan. 3, with pole vault coaching clinics slated for 10 a.m. to noon. Coaches are to include Billy Olson, who set 11 world records in the sport, and 1984 Olympic vaulter Doug Lytle.

Clinics are to be followed by a 1-5 p.m. final registration and open practice for athletes. 

Saturday’s action begins at 8 a.m. when the runway opens for the first flight. Flights are scheduled to start at approximately 9 a.m., with participating vaulters placed in flights based on their opening heights.

Prize money awaits first- through third-place finishers in the open men’s and women’s divisions, and all men and women who break the island records. Records currently stand at 18 feet, 9.2 inches for men; and 14 feet, 11.9 inches for women. 

Registration is open for the high-energy competition; cost is $75 per person through Dec. 14 and $100 per person after that date.

Proceeds from Pole Vault in Paradise benefit the nonprofit Key West Track & Field Club, whose mission includes raising money for the Key West High School track and field teams and promoting the sport of track and field within the Lower Keys community.

The event takes place in the waters where sizeable king mackerel, also called kingfish, gather each year before their annual migration. The 2025 tournament highlights a single open division that welcomes all interested teams.

The winning team in the 2025 tournament is to receive a  $75,000 prize. Prizes of $25,000 and $20,000, respectively, await the second- and third-place teams. Prize structure and award amounts are based on a field of 30 registered boats.

Events kick off Wednesday, Jan. 15, with a 5-7 p.m. final registration at The Perry Hotel & Marina, located at 7001 Shrimp Road on Stock Island. A captains meeting is set for 7:30 p.m.

Teams are to fish on two of the three following days (Jan. 16-18). The schedule of fishing days and the designated “lay day” is to be determined at the captains meeting based on anticipated weather conditions.

Tournament rules mandate that each boat team can weigh one kingfish on each of the two fishing days. The weigh-in location is at the Perry Marina.

To be eligible to weigh their fish, boat teams must check in with the tournament committee by 5 p.m.

Awards are to be presented at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at The Perry Hotel & Marina.

The entry fee is $5,000 per team. Any number of anglers can make up a team.

Successful bidders must demonstrate a “complete understanding of both the domestic and international tourism economy across multiple market segments,” according to TDC officials.

The new 3-year contracts are set to begin March 1, 2025.

Bidders can submit responses for either or both contracts as well as optional work listed in the scope of services for each agreement.

A three-person committee is to review RFPs and select successful bidders. Committee members are to be a TDC board member, a Keys community representative and an executive from Visit Florida Keys, the TDC’s operating organization.

Now in their 65th year, the long-running annual home tours are presented by the not-for-profit Old Island Restoration Foundation, which was established in 1960 to promote the preservation of Key West’s historic architecture and cultural heritage. The island city’s Old Town contains what is believed to be the largest predominantly wooden historic district in the United States, with some 3,000 structures.

The first tour is scheduled Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27-28, spotlighting five homes and the venerable St. Peter’s Episcopal Church — all festively dressed for the holidays. The self-guided explorations are set for 1-4 p.m. both days.

Subsequent tours are planned for 1-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, Feb. 14-15 and March 14-15. Each showcases multiple homes chosen for being significant historic buildings, creative renovations or examples of the Florida Keys lifestyle.

“We have gems each month,” said Barbara Span, director of the OIRF. “They include the former home of Ernest Hemingway’s carpenter, with artwork that goes back centuries, and Key West’s famed ‘wedding cake’ house dripping with lace-like wooden gingerbread.”

OIRF volunteers serve as guides at each tour stop, providing details to visitors about each featured property’s past, architecture and décor. Participants can discover unique interiors filled with quirky art and antiques as well as imaginatively designed outdoor living areas.

In great part because of the OIRF’s work, today scores of lovingly restored Key West structures still flourish as single-family homes, bed-and-breakfast guesthouses and museum attractions. The island’s historic district and its restorations have drawn attention and honors from organizations including the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Tickets for each tour are $55 per person in advance ($45 for OIRF members) or $60 on tour days at a featured home. Ticketholders receive a list of homes and a map, and can proceed from house to house at their own pace using their own transportation.

Standout celebrations Tuesday, Dec. 31, include the midnight “drop” of female impersonator Randy Roberts in a spangled super-sized red high heel shoe. Thousands of people are expected to gather outside the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex, located at 724 Duval St., as Roberts takes center stage at the annual extravaganza.

Roberts is best known for his live vocals and riveting show at Key West’s La Te Da Cabaret, where he depicts iconic female performers including Cher and Bette Midler. He has also appeared on “America’s Got Talent.”

Roberts is to entertain the audience while perched high above the crowd in the famed red shoe. In addition, spectators can enjoy a sizzling streetside show beginning at 9 p.m. and featuring local and national performers.

Just before midnight, the shoe carrying Roberts is to be lowered from the complex’s balcony to the accompaniment of cheers and applause from the crowds below — landing as midnight strikes and 2025 begins.

Party people on lower Duval Street can watch the 31st annual “drop” of a gigantic manmade conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, to the flat roof of Sloppy Joe's Bar, 201 Duval St. Festivities are emceed by a rooftop host and, as a huge clock counts down the seconds to midnight, the giant shell begins to descend. In the Key West Historic Seaport, New Year’s Eve merriment is centered around the Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 William St., and recalls the island’s colorful seafaring heritage. Just before midnight a “pirate wench” is to be lowered from atop the mast of the tall ship America 2.0 — completing her descent as the clock strikes and cannons boom to welcome 2025. Located at 201 Duval St., Sloppy Joe’s is to host the Key West End of Prohibition Celebration set for Sunday through Thursday, Dec. 1-5. Scheduled events include Prohibition-era films, live entertainment, a cocktail class, a pre-holiday auction and an epic party taking place Dec. 5, the 91st anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that revoked Prohibition.

Sloppy Joe’s is the ideal location for the celebration since original owner Joe Russell, a charterboat captain and illicit rum “importer,” operated an illegal speakeasy during the so-called “dry” years. On the day Prohibition was repealed in 1933, he opened the bar at its first location on Greene Street — moving to the current location four years later. Hemingway, a close friend of Russell’s, frequented the bar during his Key West years.

As well as live entertainment from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily at Sloppy Joe’s, the End of Prohibition Celebration is to feature several themed events — beginning Sunday, Dec. 1, with a salute to the anniversary of Sloppy Joe’s Blonde Reserve Rum.

The Prohibition Days Cocktail Class, harking back to the 1930s speakeasy era, is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at the Hemingway Social Club at the Hemingway Rum Company, 201 Simonton St. The mixology class also includes a VIP tour of the company’s Papa’s Pilar Distillery.

Festival attendees will have multiple opportunities to view two films at Key West’s Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St., that bring the gritty Prohibition era to life. “The Untouchables,” a 1987 epic set in 1930 Chicago, chronicles federal agents’ battle with legendary gangster Al Capone; and the 2015 documentary “De Palma” profiles the film’s director Brian De Palma.

Anti-Prohibition revelers can party like it’s 1933 — and costume themselves in finery from the day — during the Repeal Party Thursday, Dec. 5, at Sloppy Joe’s. Highlights are to include swinging bands, mixology presentations, costume prizes, giveaways, period cocktails and exuberant 5 p.m. festivities commemorating the historic repeal.

Despite taking place on the southernmost island in the continental United States — a locale that has never recorded a holiday snowfall — the extravaganza is to feature countless traditional elements that make the season sparkle. Set for 4-10 p.m. daily at the amphitheater, 21 Quay Road, festivities are to feature rides including giant slides for “sledding,” a beautifully decked-out carousel, a ferris wheel, carousel swings and a shriek-inducing scrambler.

Kids can drop their wish lists for Santa into a decorated mailbox for North Pole delivery, and visit with the jolly old fellow during designated hours.

Live music from the amphitheater stage is designed to set the seasonal mood, while treats and libations can be purchased from on-site vendors. Young attendees can make creative decorations and gifts at a kids’ craft tent, and a merry marketplace Saturdays and Sundays is to feature one-of a-kind items by local artisans — perfect for holiday shopping.

No mittens or snowsuits are required for the Wonderland’s quintessential holiday thrill: ice-skating on a large custom rink in Key West’s typically balmy “winter” climate. Both veteran skaters and newcomers can enjoy the unforgettable experience, with skates to be provided.

Photo stops and selfie stations are to be located on-site, backdropped by glittering light displays, so attendees can capture memories of their holiday experiences. Organizers even promise periodic “snow flurries.”

Admission to the Waterfront Winter Wonderland is $10 per person (free for kids age 5 and under). A wristband for unlimited rides and skating is $35 per person per day, or tickets for each activity can be purchased separately.

The National Hurricane Center early Thursday cancelled a tropical storm warning for the Florida Keys from the Channel 5 Bridge through Key West including Layton, Marathon, and Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys, and the Dry Tortugas.

The Florida Keys Overseas Highway, including all 42 bridges, is fully open.

Key West and Florida Keys Marathon International airports are open and unaffected.

No emergency protective actions, including visitor or resident evacuations, were taken by Monroe County Emergency Management officials. Florida Keys utilities are operating normally.

Throughout the Keys, almost all accommodations, attractions, museums, restaurants and other businesses of interest to visitors remained open as the storm passed. Charter fishing and dive boats are to resume operations as winds and seas subside.

Some Florida state parks that closed in the Middle and Lower Keys are reopening Thursday and Friday morning.

With Wednesday’s first race canceled because of the weather, organizers at the Race World Offshore Key West World Championship plan to stage races Friday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 10.

Continuing throughout the holiday season, the festival is packed with events designed to spread holiday cheer — all spiced with an individualistic Florida Keys flair. 

The festivities are to begin Wednesday, Nov. 27, with the sunset illumination of the Harbor Walk of Lights at the Key West Historic Seaport. Free to attend, the event is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Greene Street plaza at Greene and Elizabeth streets. 

During the holidays, the Harborwalk at the Key West Historic Seaport, stretching from Greene to Grinnell streets, is to glimmer with thousands of holiday lights and displays themed to celebrate Key West’s maritime history. Elements are to include dozens of lighted palm trees, a lobster trap holiday tree and a tree adorned with fishing buoys that resemble giant ornaments. 

Holiday Fest’s subsequent highlights include tours of historic lighted inns on two consecutive Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13. Visitors can discover the Yuletide spirit — and Key West’s architecture and heritage — by exploring participating locations each Friday while sampling sweets, treats and libations. 

On-the-water enthusiasts can indulge their seasonal spirit at the 33rd annual Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Decorated fishing vessels, sailboats, schooners and even dinghies are to light up the Key West Historic Seaport and harbor. Viewing areas include resorts, bars and restaurants in and around the seaport. 

Along with these signature celebrations, the festival calendar features events including the annual hometown holiday parade, a traditional family-friendly favorite. The parade is scheduled to kick off Saturday, Dec. 7, at White Street and Truman Avenue and roll down Truman and Duval Street. Marching bands, floats, community and school groups and even Santa typically participate to spread good cheer.

In addition, audiences can discover the Florida Keys’ seafaring heritage, coral reef environment and holiday spirit during eight performances of “Nutcracker Key West.” Debuting Dec. 5, the production transforms the well-loved seasonal ballet into a celebration of Key West’s culture, traditions and underwater wonders.

Revelers also can enjoy holiday lights tours via the Conch Tour Train and Old Town Trolley, a free concert and bazaar at the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, festive fundraising events, a “Fiesta de Navidad” dance production, multiple New Year’s Eve “drops” that spoof New York City’s annual Times Square “ball drop” and much more.

Since its inception, the thatch-roofed Hogfish has become renowned for its mellow “old Keys” atmosphere and colorful clientele as well as its full bar and menu fare. Notable patrons over the years have included entertainer Jimmy Buffett and his fellow musicians, congressmen and senators, celebrity chefs and a group Mongelli characterizes as “cool people from all over the world.”

The anniversary concert is to begin at 5 p.m. with entertainment by Keys troubadour Howard Livingston and his Mile Marker 24 Band. 

Scheduled headliners are three members of the late Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band, longtime musical cohorts who are also famed for their individual careers. They are singer, songwriter and guitarist McAnally; composer and percussionist Eric Darken; and chart-topping songwriter and performer Scotty Emerick.

The Hogfish stands at 6810 Front Street in a section of Stock Island with a vibrant heritage. A ferry that once connected Key West and Havana departed from a dock across from the bar, and local lore says Safe Harbour was a staging area for the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961. Today, the Hogfish salutes that heritage while adding its own flavor to the area. 

“It’s an old working waterfront blue-collar bar and restaurant, and people say they love it because they can sit and relax — feel like they’re part of the community or feel like a local,” Mongelli said. 

There is no cover charge for the anniversary concert and celebration.

The Turtle Hospital in Marathon and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council’s Florida Keys Eco-Experience Trail Pass received silver awards in the Best Conservation Initiative and Best New Tourism Experience categories respectively.

Staged in London last Thursday, the awards event gathered travel industry leaders to honor excellence across multiple categories. Entries were judged independently by a panel of leading travel journalists.

The awards also marked the launch of the quarterly JRNY America magazine, committed to sharing unique stories of United States travel. JRNY America is a spin-off of JRNY magazine, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic by a collective of travel writers and photographers. The magazine is now one of the U.K.’s leading travel publications.

The event was a highlight of the 10-day Fantasy Fest costuming and masking celebration that continues through Sunday.

Produced by the Key West Business Guild, the headdress competition drew more than a dozen entries and offered spectators a unique blend of entertainment, pageantry and design ingenuity.

Gary Marion, also known as Key West’s iconic drag queen Sushi, took first place for “Martian Day of the Dead.” The elaborate ensemble featured a skeletal mask and towering multicolored headdress bedecked with flowers, big-eyed space creatures and grinning green skulls.

Second place went to Guy Hermelin for “DJ Time Warp,” a massive creation topped with a supersized “boombox” and stylized concert speakers. 

The third-place winner was Elaine Shelby for “Wicked Dragon Lady,” an exotic entry inspired by her travels to Asian countries.

The evening starred acclaimed female impersonator Randy Roberts as master of ceremonies, with DJ Rude Girl overseeing musical selections. Local performers offered stellar entertainment between headdress presentations.

“The Headdress Ball is Fantasy Fest’s premier LGBTQ event,” said Rob Dougherty, executive director of the guild. “It was an amazing night filled with talent and creativity.”

 The event benefits the not-for-profit guild and its work in supporting Key West’s gay and gay-friendly enterprises, local community, and position as an internationally recognized LGBTQ vacation spot.

Barfels is overseeing the island chain’s tourism marketing and communications strategy for advertising, branding, public relations, social media, website and content marketing. Previously, she was chief marketing officer of Colorado’s Visit Estes Park for three years.

"Heidi is a proven go-getter in the tourism industry and is the kind of innovative leader we need on the team," said Kara Franker, president and chief executive officer for Visit Florida Keys. "Her first assignment is to breathe new life into our marketing plan and initiatives, and I have all the confidence in the world that she is going to knock it out of the park."

Among other honors, Barfels’ work has earned the Hotel Sales & Marketing Association International’s Adrian Awards and the Colorado Tourism Office’s Governor’s Awards.

She serves on Destinations International’s public relations & communications committee and is a Public Relations Society of America member. She co-authored a pioneering white paper on generative AI and is known as a technology and destination branding expert.

"The Florida Keys & Key West are a place where people disconnect from the ordinary and immerse themselves in something truly special," Barfels said. "I'm honored to have the opportunity to build onto the already strong marketing efforts to highlight this wonderful community." 

Barfels previously held marketing management roles with Visit Lauderdale in Fort Lauderdale, and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in Miami. She was principal of her own communications company, and also worked with Lou Hammond Group publicizing luxury hotels and destinations including Panama City Beach, Fla., and Charleston, S.C.

Wednesday night's animal antics were a family-friendly highlight of the 10-day costuming and masking festival — this year themed “It’s a 90s Neon Cosmic Carnival!”

The Pet Masquerade featured several dozen entries, ranging from pet-and-person duos to groups of people and animals that performed lighthearted skits.

Standouts included a family costumed as space aliens with their “intergalactic” Newfoundland dog, a troupe of human and canine superheroes and villains, a Key West takeoff on the classic “Baywatch” television show, and an Italian Greyhound portraying Elton John and seated at a glittering red piano.

Proceeds from the Pet Masquerade benefit the Florida Keys’ Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm.

Fantasy Fest continues through Sunday with events including a lavish Headdress Ball, a masquerade march through Key West's picturesque historic district, and Saturday night's flamboyant Fantasy Fest Parade that typically attracts more than 60,000 revelers.

The production gives the well-known storyline of “The Nutcracker” a unique twist, transforming the tale of young Clara’s dreamlike visit to the land of the Sugarplum Fairy into a celebration of Key West’s culture, traditions and underwater wonders.

Rich in talent and visual pageantry, “Nutcracker Key West” stars 16 professional dancers from New York City alongside 200 Keys children and adults. Performers include Maurizio Nardi, a former principal with the prestigious Martha Graham Dance Company.

Staged at the Tennessee Williams Theatre, located at 5901 College Road on the campus of the College of the Florida Keys, the ballet is produced by the theater’s artistic team. The local and visiting dancers bring the well-loved story to life, beginning with scenes depicting an island city party circa 1863.

Standout dance sequences including a dream battle where toy sailors and the “Conch Nutcracker” protect heroine Clara from the Rooster King, recalling Key West’s free-range chicken population. A scene set on the Keys’ coral reef features young children costumed as tumbling pink shrimp in King Neptune’s court, colorful angelfish and a school of sparkling red snapper.

The storyline also includes imagery drawn from the history of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, shipwrecked off Key West in 1622 and humorously dubbed “Atoeshu” in the ballet.

A holiday tradition that Key West residents share with visitors, “Nutcracker Key West” incorporates intricate choreography, elaborate sets and dazzling costumes.

The marauding zombies biked down South Roosevelt Boulevard beside the Atlantic and into Key West's picturesque downtown -- where the unearthly antics culminated in the ZombieFest After Party at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater in Truman Waterfront Park.

The Zombie Bike Ride caps the first weekend of Key West's annual Fantasy Fest celebration that continues through Sunday, Oct. 27.

Other festival highlights include a pet masquerade, the exotic Headdress Ball, a Masquerade March for costumed participants and an evening parade scheduled Saturday, Oct. 26, featuring lavish motorized floats and elaborately costumed walking groups.

Opening Wednesday night is “The Fire Inside,” an inspiring film about two-time Olympic women’s boxing gold medalist Claressa “T-Rex” Shields and her fight for women athletes.

This year’s Golden Key Award for Emerging Talent is to be presented to Florida writer and director Delaney Buffett, daughter of the late singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, for her breakout actress role and direction in “Adult Best Friends,” a Spotlight film. Her previous directorial credits include “The Spring,” winner of Best Documentary at the 2017 Toronto International Short Film Festival.

Florida films and shorts curated from 1,500 submissions include “The Salt Cured Life,” featuring Key West chef and rum entrepreneur Paul Menta sharing how the power of salt water can help one find balance in life.

Florida Focus films include “Mario Sanchez: Over the Beautiful Florida Keys” about the late famed wood-carving folk artist, by Roberto Otera Morfa; and “Naked Ambition: Bunny Yeager” by Miami-based Emmy-nominated Kareen Tabsch.

“The Room Next Door,” starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, is to screen Saturday as director, screenwriter and author Pedro Almodovar’s first English-language film. It focuses on a best-selling author who rekindles a relationship with a war journalist friend.

Screening venues include Williams Hall, 729 Fleming St.; The Perry Hotel & Marina, 7001 Shrimp Road on Stock Island; and Regal Key West, 3338 N. Roosevelt Blvd.

The Golden Key for Excellence in Costume Design honors Academy Award-nominated Danny Glicker, who is to participate in a discussion of his work moderated by Time magazine film critic Stephanie Zacharek.

“Danny Glicker may be the most formidable contemporary costume designer of his craft. He has built the characters of Harvey Milk, Brian Wilson, Jack Kerouac and so many other legends to grace the silver screen,” said Michael Tuckman, the festival’s director of programming.

Documentary highlights include “Men of War” by Miami-based filmmaker Billy Corbin about an international conspiracy.

This year’s LGBTQ films — programmed with the assistance of Eugene Hernandez, executive director of the Sundance Film Festival — include “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story,” chronicling the life of singer-actress Liza Minnelli.

Sunday’s closing night is to feature an outdoor Florida premiere of “Rebel Country,” starring country music’s Jelly Roll, Sam Williams, Breland and Blanco Brown.
